Anthony Pilkington was a notable absentee from Norwich City’s matchday squad at Wolves with the midfielder using his personal Twitter account to make it clear he was fit for duty.

"Hi pal @paddyjdavitt just to clarify mate no niggle been fully-fit all pre-season"

Tweet from @Pilkington_11 account

City chief Neil Adams stated in his post-match interview the Republic of Ireland midfielder had missed training on Friday but travelled to the Black Country with the rest of the squad. Pilkington has recently been linked with a Bolton transfer switch, but Adams reiterated there was nothing untoward in the absences of Pilkington or Gary Hooper (calf) who was also ruled out.

“I said during the build-up that picking a bench is as hard if not harder than the starting line-up,” he said. “We have one or two niggles and Anthony himself did not train on Friday. You go with what you feel and cover yourself in all positions. Anthony travelled with us but he wasn’t involved. I felt we had the bench to deal with everything. With Gary we hope he will be involved this week. He has picked up that injury, a calf strain, and we hope he will be fit. Only time will tell.”

Lewis Grabban was a genuine bright spot for Adams on a day when little went to plan against Wolves at Molineux.

Grabban was denied twice by home keeper Carl Ikeme in the second period as he looked to maintain his fine goalscoring form in pre-season following his summer switch from Bournemouth, where he had plundered more than 20 goals on the south coast last season.

Adams conceded the frontman’s best chance was when he latched on to Russell Martin’s deep ball but miscued a right-footed effort from the edge of the six-yard box that allowed Ikeme the chance to shovel behind for a corner, but he saw enough to underline why he was keen to make him his first summer signing.

“He had a couple of opportunities and he was a whisker away from the first one,” said Adams. “I really thought he had scored when he went through and hit it down the right-hand channel. I thought the ball was going in but it got a deflection. He works the line well, he has got goals in him, as we all saw from last season, and he could have had a couple more.”

  • NA Needs to get to specsavers cause Anthony Pilkington is our best winger and hes getting pushed away from the club. He's scored the most goals out of all the wingers. Him and Wes can be lethal together!!

  • That`s not his shinpad, Matty. That`s his Errol Flynn. Clever airbrushing of the photograph obscures the truth. If he ever saw something exciting in the crowd, he`d be fixed in a frozen goose-step. Keep out of sight, Delia... or it could be a swell party. Matt has confirmed my prejudice: Social Media is for twits.

  • Niggle;to critcise constantly and repeatedly, in a petty or peevish manner. Apparantly its from a Norwiegan word. So no niggle there then just a minor injury or not as the case may be. But its not been a good weekend, the result. an FA inquiry into Ollsen, Police and club investigating alleged racial comments from our supporters at Wolves and now this disagreement over a 'niggle'

  • Years ago you had a first team and a reserve team that played in something called the Combination league. That was before the advent of squads and substitutes. Most managers knew their first team and the reserves had to hope for injuries or chronic loss of form to break through. An unhappy player could put in a transfer request, losing his share of the fee, or knuckle under. Today we have social media, satellite tv, agents and BBC pundits paid to write how to engineer a transfer. I posted during pre season there was something not right about Pilks attitude but if he is not happy then I don't blame him for using whatever is available to move on. In fact, if he was fit for Wolves then I would have thought he was one of the flair players Adams would want to use in his quest to move away from the negatives of the Hughton era. Maybe Pilks thought that too.

  • A poor start, the ref played to the home crowd Elliott Benett taken out from behind nothing, Russell Martin similar nothing. A comment made to me a while ago about something completely different was that 'it came from a very good source from within the club' my response was that they should keep their mouth shut if they are a position of trust. So yes players should know when to do exactly that.

  • Not the first time Pilks has broken ranks. That was an "I`m fit, come and get me" message, I`d guess. It`s all these dratted social media gadgets. Makes it so easy for players to twitter stuff to their dodgy `pals` in the media. There should be some sort of confidentality clause in players` contracts. In effect, Pilkington has implied that the Manager is a disseminator of untruths...

  • Pilks puts more effort in than Redmond, Redmond is like John Barnes in reverse, plays well for his Country and not his club, those of you who remember Barnes will know what I mean

  • Im sick an tired of this. Not just Pilks, but everything at our club happening in the public eye. Im sure it happens at all clubs but it shouldnt be happening in the public eye for all to see. It happened consistently under Hughton and has appeared to have continued under Adams. Sick of it! Yes we know when a manager says "so and so picked up a little knock" it may not be the truth but we dont need to in house arguements going public as when fans pick up on it, the chinese whispers go into over drive, the negativity flows like a river and before we know it, its snow balled and we will find ourselves in league 1. Extreme? Maybe but it could happen if we dont get our house in order!

  • The answer is simple, NA was determined that his game plan was going to be a diamond formation and Pilks does not fit into that so well as Surman. The formation was not working and should have been changed at half time but NA seemed afraid to throw the dice. I was screaming for Lafferty to be put on at half time as Redmond was not working as a left sided striker. Bennett was not having one of his better games so I would have taken him off for Lafferty. That is not an after the game comment as I and my fellow supporters were saying it on 45 mins. I fear we are following the same path as the previous manger but pray I am wrong. I would also have considered putting Tettey on at half time to help negate their winger who ultimately got Olsson sent off as he was far too quick for him.

  • Shame really, Pilks (when fit) would be one of the first names on my squad list, he's got more goals in him than some of our other wide midfielders for a start. However, it is looking increasingly likely that he won't feature much for us again. Our loss, I think.

  • As a fan it looks like we have a group of want away players who look good on a team sheet but are of no practical use to us. At a guess Pilks, Fer, Hooper, Becchio, Bassong, Tettey?, Olsson. It is the same for all the relegated teams. Fulham shipped them out and went with youth, Cardiff pay over the odds wages. We will find out who is right later in the season. It takes time to adapt to this division and teams like our neighbours have a massive advantage in the short term as they have a settled team and players no-one else wants. We have to pick up points quickly and bring in players who will settle quickly or persuade these players to stay and contribute to the cause. Quick decision needed on NA too if he continues to make basic mistakes. Think we have a lot more pain to come before things pick up.
