Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the Bluebirds want to tie up a deal for Norwich City midfielder Anthony Pilkington.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Pilkington was first touted with a move to Wales on Wednesday and Solskjaer confirmed after watching his side’s Capital One Cup win against Coventry at Northampton later that evening he is keen to bring the Republic of Ireland international to Cardiff - with Skysports claiming he is undergoing a medical on Thursday lunchtime.

Reports of a £1m switch, however, are wide of the mark with the final figure set to be in the region of £2m for the 26-year-old who has one year left on his current Carrow Road deal.

Solskjaer is in the market for a wide player with Craig Noone currently injured.

“We’re looking at different options in different positions, and maybe we lack a wide-man,” the former Manchester United scoring legend told Skysports on Wednesday evening. “We’ll have to see what happens when we get Anthony Pilkington signed, and it’s something we’ll have to look at. A wide man is something we lack while Craig Noone is out injured. We’ll have to see when it’s all finalised.”

Pilkington was given an extended summer break after his international commitments, scoring an equaliser in the 1-1 friendly draw against SC Bastia that concluded the club’s Italian tour trip, but the midfielder was only used from the bench by City boss Neil Adams in the two home Carrow Road warm-up matches that followed City’s return.

The ex-Huddersfield player made it clear on his personal Twitter account last weekend he was fit for duty after not featuring in the matchday squad for Norwich’s 1-0 Championship defeat at Wolves.

But the midfielder has endured an injury-disrupted career in Norfolk since his move from the Terriers in 2011, scoring 14 goals in 75 league appearances for the club. He made only 10 Premier League starts last season after 25 during Chris Hughton’s first season in charge in place of Paul Lambert, who brought him to Carrow Road.

  • Watford and then Blackburn, both home fixtures will be the true markers as to where this season is heading. If we retain any ambition of being a Premier Club next year then these two fixtures must result in 6 points. I live in hope but the 1 point out of a potential 18 that Neil Adams has already accrued does not fill me with optimism. However, if we score 4 against Watford with a convincing display at home then all the harsh criticism of the current regime will go away.

  • We have to accept Adams' assessment that Pilks is no longer of a mind to do his bit for Norwich City. Perhaps a better man manager (like Lambert) could have pulled him round, who knows? More importantly what is being done to strengthen the defence???? If no reinforcements arrive by the end of the transfer window, forget it. Our back four already have four yellow cards after one match. Add in the probability of injuries and the fact that they are not that good anyway and you can clearly see that the only way is down with the current resources available. Get on with it Adams.

  • Absolutely superb lincs. I really enjoyed your post. And u r right, ignore the league now - its over. Lets turn our attentions to crawley . Btw selling the only midfielder we have who can actually shoot to a championship rival is utterly braindead in anyone's book . A fit and happy pilks is as good as anyone we have . Unfortunately like tierney, fox, holt, hoolahan and surman before him, hughton ripped every segment of happiness out of pretty much the entire team that got us to the dizzy heights of the prem and kept us there.

  • Anthony Pilkington is injured (again), so Neil Adams offers to go shopping for him. While in the local supermarket, he bumps into David McNally - MacNally. “Hello, Neil, what are you doing in here?" "I’m getting a bag of potatoes for Anthony Pilkington.” says Adams. "Sounds like a fair swap to me !!”

  • Cripes!!!......I don't believe you lot. Talk about panic I think some of you have not stopped panicking since the end of last season. NCFC are about to write a new chapter in their history and be it good or bad it won't be any worse than it was last season and will most likely be an awful lot better. All this angst against NA is misplaced or have you all forgotten how bad CH was last season and from my perspective, technically incompetent as both coach and man manager. What is now required is for Supporters to do what they are supposed to do and support the team, manager and board, none of which have made any claim to the degree of perfection being sought by some on this board. RS was more of a problem than an asset to the club hence his sale, whilst AP has a significant injury record which in all probability will get worse as he ages and RVW deserves some consideration from the club as he was effectively set up to fail by the previous managerial regime. In terms of purchases people should be aware that the next fortnight or so is probably the most difficult of the transfer window where teams hold out on deals in an attempt to push up transfer fees as the window approaches it's close. I for one am looking forward to a better season this time around albeit in a lower division. OTBC.

  • 57charles - just what I said last night - Adams has looked uncomfortable right from the day they appointed him - like a rabbit caught in headlights - is this fear getting to players? He doesn't inspire me with confidence - does he inspire the players - because Sunday's performance lacked inspiration and confidence totally.

  • Not too worried about the league. We have a great draw in the league cup and the chance for some silverware. Even better if glory comes in the FA Cup. Word of advice to NA, don't sign any cup tied players and rest your star men ahead of each round. To the technical director, coat the players boots in dubbin and nail in new studs. I'm preparing by dusting my rattle, ironing the rosette with the flat tin cup attached and buying some new radio valves so I can be sure to hear the lunch time draw. Perfick.

  • Pilks hadn't recovered from injury when we bought him from Huddersfield and to be honest he kept picking up further niggles and never really got a decent run of consistency. No hard feelings at all - it just hasn't quite worked out for either party. As for Lafferty - I could understand him being frustrated that he gets talked up by the manager and is then benched for the first game in favour of a 5ft 4in winger playing as a striker. Hughtoneque team selection. The Ipswich game is a real "landscape changer" for Adams - if he hasn't got us ticking in time for that game I think he will be gone by Christmas

In the meantime however matches will be played and they will show us if there are any green shoots regarding results and style of play. For NA in particular a win is needed and I don't care what anyone says about how difficult the games were at end of last season, a record of one point in eighteen is a chunky monkey on the back. Regards Pilks, a talented but enigmatic player who was not a regular. Adeyemi, Pilks and Marshall lining up for Cardiff is a worry considering how past players tend to haunt us. I just hope Cardiff have not signed Lambert as manager before we meet or it could be meltdown.

If the player improves and gets bigger exposure, PL, Internationals, etc. then that can increase the value but the depreciation is extremely quick as the contract runs out. The key is will he sign a new contract that the club likes and if not, what is the best option available for the future.
