Norwich City refused to grant Wes Hoolahan his wish for a Carrow Road exit on Friday night after a quiet finale to the transfer window.

The Canaries resisted any urge to bolster their own ranks following the loan arrivals of Jonas Gutierrez and Joseph Yobo, but none of the club’s senior stars were allowed to leave - with only development striker Jamar Loza extending his loan stint with League One promotion hopefuls Orient until March 8.

City announced on their official Twitter account an hour before the scheduled 11pm deadline there would be no further business in or out of the club after maintaining a hardline stance with the Irish midfielder who had a transfer request rejected last week following firm interest from Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa.

Norwich’s Premier League rivals West Brom were heavily linked with a surprise late move for the Dubliner in the closing hours of the window, but reports in the Midlands claimed the Canaries were only interested in a permanent deal rather than a loan move for the 31-year-old.

Hoolahan could still go out on loan to the Football League when the emergency loan window opens later this month should Chris Hughton decide the Republic of Ireland international no longer features in his plans after stating he wanted to cut his ties with the Canaries.

Hughton admitted he would have to weigh up whether Hoolahan was in the right frame of mind to be involved at Cardiff ahead of today’s Premier League game against the Bluebirds.

“That is something I have to decide,” he said. “Since the initial news of an enquiry (from Villa) he was in two squads.

“It was my choice to leave him out of the Newcastle squad and it is normal that you have to assess those things when you have enquiries about your players. Wes is not the first player who has been in this situation and he won’t be the last but the responsibility always rests with the club and whether it suits them or not. That is never going to change.”

  • Keep their powder dry? What powder? You can't afford to stand still in the premier league while others improve, that's without taking into account our steady regression in proformance into what now most weeks appears to be nothing better than a championship team (and not a good one) I fear the worst, Hughton has proved in his 2 years he is incapable of turning things around.

  • Yes, a lot of the teams beneath us did spend money on players. Looking at details though, how many of the players they bought are better than the ones we have here already? Hardly a one that i can see. All we have to do from now to the end of the season is get behind our team and carry them over the line. Hoping for some sunshine in the Summer

  • The only positive I can see is that they don't trust Hughton with any more cash. Or they're battening down the hatches for the r-word. My nightmare: Championship under Hughton.

  • Fans still complaining will they never stop. Get behind the team. So we didn't any money yesterday so what many teams didn't either. The prices some teams ask for there players in January is just stupid. Norwich very rarely buy in January its the summer they do their business. We do have quality in the side they just haven't shown it yet. Still plenty of points on offer. So come on lets OTBC.

  • Oh boy, I don't believe the happy clappers on here who still believe that Hughton and co. are up to managing a Prem. club. As for moaning? of course we are, because these clowns have achieved absolutely nothing with the talent at their disposal. Face facts, Hoops and RVW scored goals for fun before they came here, Fer, Olsen, Martin, Snodgrass, Ruddy, Tettey, even Elamander and Wes......all international players, all who have had every modicum of flair, attacking football coached out of them by these incompetents. Yes, I will get behind my team, and hope they can survive in this league till we get rid of Hughton

  • All of this only goes to prove what we have known all along. This manager (hmmmm) is not the "Mr Nice Guy", that everyone seemed to think he is. In fact he is an arrogant, ignorant, stubborn and utterly useless individual who seems to think that we as true supporters of this club will accept. Well, Mr. Hughton, you have proved yourself to be a pathetic manager, an even worse coach, and a spiteful individual who wouldn't play Wes or any player with the slightest modicum of attacking flair. Allied to the fact that you wont play him, you won't even let the man ply his considerable skills anywhere else either. I just pray that Delia and the board will get rid of this idiot and his muppets soon, because under him we will surely finish up, not only dropping to the Championship, but probably back to League 1.

  • City distracted people with this boring Wes saga, to divert attention way from the fact they had no plays to buy and quality or to strengthen the squad.

  • Much of the spending in the transfer window is panic buying, and panic buying of players not wanted by their present clubs. If the club didn't trust Hughton to buy players , surely they would have sacked him by now. Cant see the current regime keeping someone they don't trust. Why do people make such wild allegations?

  • We have really come out of this badly. No significant recruits, players wanting away but being forced to remain here. Great for morale, eh?! Our squad is far too thin on quality as it is but is made worse by a manager who can't even get them doing the very basics like pass and move, getting midfield working to support our attack and closing down opponents early and before they get into danger areas. Persisting in playing a left footed player on the right wing is just symptomatic of Hughton's lack of nous when it comes to setting up his teams. We are now getting into the season's run-in and there is not a scrap of evidence that Hughton has the ability to improve our performances. It is frankly a mess and I fear, I really do, for our Premiership survival, especially given the extra quality manpower clubs like Palace and Cardiff have brought in.

  • Hughton has had a lot of cash to spend over the last 18 months - by NCFC standards. Most recruits seemed pretty good; Bassong, Turner, Garrido, Whittaker, Tettey, Snodgrass, RvW, Hooper, Redmond, Fer, Olsson. About £40m? Looks good on paper but the game is played on grass (ish). Shades of Brian Clough. Some aberrant moments like signing Butterfield and throwing away Vaughan. So maybe the board feels he has to work with what he`s got. Seems reasonable - as long as we don`t get relegated!

  • Wes has made it quite clear he only wants to play for lambert so his mind set is not on playing for our team. He needs to go out on loan and if he wants to move to Birmingham send him to WBA . Let someone else pay his wages. I have always been a huge Wes fan but no more. He has shown where his loyalty lies and after his tv outburst it is no longer with NCFC. Let's put all this to bed and support our team OTBC

  • No money but no one is admitting it, why else would you not buy another two players to bolster an ailing squad , everyone else has bought decent players especially palace . Hats off to them, look what we could have bought with £8-5 million if he hadnt have wasted it , there is a flip side i suppose, Mcnally doesnt trust hoots to spend anymore cos he's goin soon. But. I fear tis too late for us now.

  • Well it looks like we have to go with what we have got. In the summer everyone was raving about the the signings of Hoops and RVW. If we are not going to play the wide men on their correct side of the pitch to enable them to get to the line then drop one out. Play Fer and Tettey and either Wes or Howson when he is fit to get the ball for the front two to run onto. Pointless playing two wingers if we are not going to get the best out of them. So lets get behind the team and give them the support they need whether they deserve it or not. Especially if we get any more displays like Tuesdays against Newcastle. I agree Hoots does not seem to have a clue most of the time but we are stuck with the 3 amigos for the time being. So get behind the team they are going to need that 12th man in the coming games.

  • What a mess! I can't blame Wes for wanting to leave but can only hope now that the club comes to its' senses and patches things up with him. He remains the man who I think can keep us in the division. Play him just off Hoops and we might at least see some goal mouth action. Getting Wes back on the team would go a long way towards making up for a dismal transfer window; he deserves much more than the odd appearance off the bench.

  • David I agree we do have enough quality in the team but Hughton is incapable of tapping it, he has made players individually and collectively worse. I all for supporting the team, but without change we are only getting worse. What have you seen that suggests otherwise
