Sebastien Bassong and Ricky van Wolfswinkel are the notable absentees from Norwich City’s 21-man squad announced for Saturday’s pre-season opener at non league neighbours Dereham Town.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The duo have not been included for the short trip to Aldiss Park, although both returned to pre-season training with the rest of Neil Adams’ squad. Republic of Ireland pair Wes Hoolahan and Anthony Pilkington will also not be involved after being given extra time off having featured for the Irish on their summer tour of the USA which only concluded in early June.

Swedish international Martin Olsson is also omitted. The full-back was set to undergo surgery on a shoulder injury at the start of the summer after playing through the pain barrier for the majority of the second half of City’s Premier League season. City’s new signings Lewis Grabban and Kyle Lafferty are both included in the party and are expected to feature.

Adams has already pledged to give the majority of the squad on duty at the Magpies some game-time with Norwich also poised to visit Conference Premier Braintree Town on Tuesday before flying out for a three-date training camp in Italy.

• Norwich City squad: John Ruddy, Steven Whittaker, Bradley Johnson, Russell Martin, Michael Turner, Lewis Grabban, Jonny Howson, Kyle Lafferty, Gary Hooper, Jamar Loza, Elliott Bennett, Javier Garrido, Luciano Becchio, Josh Murphy, Nathan Redmond, Ryan Bennett, Jacob Murphy, Declan Rudd, Alexander Tettey, Andrew Surman, Adel Gafaiti.

• Tickets for Dereham game are still on sale but the Magpies are advising supporters to book in advance by calling the club on 01362 690460. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £1 for children under-16, with car parking passes £2. Tickets will also be available on the turnstile from 1pm on Saturday.

  • Must be difficult to recruit quality players to an out of the way place like Norwich especially players of Premiership quality. It was proved impossible when City were in the Premiership so don't expect to see any outstanding players when the season begins in the Chumpionship. But I would expect to see some warriors who never give up trying to win.

  • MichiCan; many years ago, a Scottish work colleague commented that Norwich was "just a big village". As I`d left Norwich at age 18 and was yet to return ( then age 28), I really didn`t `get` what he meant. Now, at age 66 and back in the County of my father(s) for 9 years now, I do see what he meant. The local press takes on the manner of Village Newsletters. Insiderism. Complacency. Little Englanderism. Vested interests. Dullardery. Sundry other "isms". Xenophobia. Shortly after I returned to these parts, I was engaged in "conversation" by an ex-pat Londoner who opined, at great length, that Norfolk people were "not terribly clever". He then asked where I came from. "Norwich, born 1948". He apologised. "No need" said I. "I agree". I still do.

  • Surely our illustrious reporters can report on who has taken part in training and who hasn't, and for that matter whether Olsson has had his operation. Perhaps asking questions of the manager or players is required but then isn't that the job. I wish Carrow Road and the press would stop treating fans as stupid. It seems that Adams appointment was to ensure that the board and McNally retained control of everything - Adams seems only to be releasing information when he is allowed to.

  • I would be very surprised if Ricky is being forced out on Adams' say so. Adams went out of his way to say that fans shouldn't make a scapegoat of Ricky late last season. I think the no. 20 bit is simply that he didn't have a good season last season so if he wants a lower number again then he needs to earn it. That's fair enough in my books. Primarily forcing him out makes no financial sense. We know he's a good player. Far better to get him firing again and then sell if it's deemed the right thing than get rid when he'll have lost a lot of his market value. Then again, McNally was pretty damning in his assessment of him at the end of season, so who knows? Time will tell. Either way I think he's a great lad and I really hope things turn for the better for him this season one way or the other.

A polite reply to C over\on\under the Moon a while back, using "Cotman" as a humorously intended quasi h0monym, was rejected as "offensive". So Archie`d never heard of John Sell Cotman of the `Norwich School`, it seemed. Though, suddenly, we have John Sell Cotmoon. Coincidence? No, methinks. • Gassing and Wolfswinkie are not involved in the squad for the Dereham game. They are not involved for a reason. This reason is the Managers decision . There will be an excellent reason for these two players omission by Neil Adams, whether it is injury, whether it is lack of training ground performance, whether it is lack of commitment or whether they are in the process of being sold . Neil Adams will have a reason for dropping them. It is time to get behind him and trust him, certainly not a time to start questioning his man management skills, certainly not before a ball has been kicked. John Sell Cootmans comments are ill founded and unhelpful at best.

If the man in charge does not rate him then why keep him. I just dont like the tactics the club are using to try rid themselves of the RVW problem.

  • Whilst I think RVW could be well worth a shot, he does look a bit lightweight and even if he does possess some quality and good technique, Adams and co may have decided he just isn't suited to this league. Why keep him on the wage bill since we have what, 3 strikers on the books that have done well in this league. Adams is undeniably inexperienced but let's not be too ready to assume he is clueless. To say he has only made championship level acquisitions is ridiculous. Do you expect a proven premier league striker to sign for a club in the championship. As for poor man management, you have no idea and are speculating. Let's at least wait for the season to start before we jump on the managers back. If we sell\loan RVW and the other strikers start knocking in goals he will be soon forgotten

  • Google the retained list Mich. Basically everyone (inc people like Pilks and turner) who were technically about to go out of contract had options the club could pick up automatically regardless what the player may feel to extend it by 1 year. All senior players were retained except Fox, Nash and some youngsters. Pilks, Surman, Wes and Ryan Bennett are the only players out of contract this season (so the club said last week.)

  • Exactly. Either those reporting the story are twisting it to spark this sort of out cry....or NCFC are being really really really careless in what they release into the public domain. End of the day it comes down to who Adams wants and who he doesnt and to be its clear as day he wants rid of Bassong and RVW, more than anyone else. Sheer fact he praises a youth player who scored 1 goal from 7 appearances like hes the next Messi and barely says anything positive about RVW speaks volumes to me about how little he wants RVW at NCFC. Guess we've just got to accept that and trust he gets this right.

  • Exactly. These stories are either being twisted by those reporting them to spark this sort of out cry or NCFC are being really really really really stupid in what they put out there in the public domain. We are not even being given the old white lies that RVW has suffered "a minor knock in training (no mention of what this knock ever is) and should be ok in a few days" rubbish. Adams has been far more positive about a youth player who scored 1 goal from 7 appearances than RVW. That alone is enough for me to establish the fact Adams clearly does not rate or want RVW. Shame but ultimately Adams is in charge and if he feels RVW and former POTS Bassong are surplus then all we can do is trust and hope hes right.

As committed as he appears to be, Adams may have decided he isn't suited to championship football. If that's the case, hopefully we keep Hooper. Would much rather loan RVW than sell and take huge hit on his transfer fee

  • I've been waiting for Archie to put this story up ever since I read the article on the official NCFC site. I cannot believe the lengths the clubs going to, to try force RVW out. Taking his squad number away with out telling him, leaving him out of the squad to face Dereham. I may be totally wrong and he picked up an injury in training but he's not taken to twitter like usual to comment on it so it does leave me thinking hes been simply left out like Bassong who Adams clearly wants rid of as well. Its a shame because ive been convinced that if we give RVW (and hooper etc) the right service they will score for fun at any level! I see no Bunn in the squad either, so ill assume its Ruddy no1 and Rudd no2. Thats fine by me although I feel sorry for Bunn. Decent keeper but size always lets him down. Im a bit miffed about the Olsson issue to. Weeks ago Adams commented that he "wasnt sure if Olsson had had his surgery or not"....as mind blowing as that is, ill be even more mad if he misses the start of the season because we left his surgery too late. Especially when he could have had it before the AFC game when we were already down and there was no Sweden at the world cup. On tomorrows squad, Adams says he will play 2 different starting line ups in each half. how is he going to do that with 21 players? Ive tried picking two different sides for each half and even if we had the correct 22 players its still a job as it highlights how light we are in some areas.
