Norwich City defender Martin Olsson has been charged by the FA for his reaction to the red card he received during the Canaries’ opening day defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Olsson appeared to give referee Simon Hooper a light push when he realised he was being sent off for a second bookable offence - and later seemed to kick out at a water-bottle as he headed for the dressing room.

A statement on the FA’s official website said: “It is alleged that Olsson’s action in making physical contact with the referee immediately prior to being shown a red card and for his behaviour as he left the field of play amounted to improper conduct, which occurred outside the jurisdiction of the match officials.”

Olsson has until 6pm on Thursday to respond to the charge.

  • Can't believe some of the nagative comments regarding Olsson. E.G he's not fit, he wants away( i'm not surprsed if he does the way he has been slagged off on this site) Just a couple of reminders- he's one of our best players, he played most of last year with a shoulder injury( not a sick note in sight) , he was outpaced by a very fast tricky winger on sunday why wasn't he given help when everyone could see that Parra was red hot. He had one iffy yellow card and brought down Parra for the second yellow card - Parra would have been clear on goal if Olsson hadn't " stopped him". Don't slag off one of our best players for a blip on a bad day for us . Some of you need to look up the meaning of the word supporter instead of being critics.

  • @ Canary West. Yup I realise that, but equally you sometimes just have to move on. You can't touch officials, not even a light push. Can't understand what all the fuss is about. Iffy first yellow, but it's in the papers now, so can't be undone. Silly push, possible suspension, can't undo it.

  • Of course you could try Redman at the back, he's quick. It would mean playing him out of position but that doesn't seem to be unusual.

  • having seen the refreshing impact of bringing Murphys up from youth team into first team, is this a chance to give left back Toffolo a chance to make the step up. Like the Murphs he's played England U19 level at left back so cant be far off? even if on the bench and a few minutes against Watford if chance comes up? At least he'll be hungry.

  • Hope he is not going the way of Bassong, getting dropped and having an easy ride with full pay and being quite happy to do so. Proffessional football at its least proffessional.

  • Canarywest, I agree why do people including the commentators keep harping on about "fitness" these players are fit, but the money they get is so much, they just don't bother. Olsson got what he deserved, he let the side down

  • Olsson should be fined and suspended by the F.A. You cannot raise your arms to an official. Olsson is a professional footballer and he knows he cannot do that. He should also be fined by the club for unprofessional behaviour, not least because he turns up pre season an obvious 10 to 12 pounds overweight and so unfit he was 2 yards too slow to every challenge. Adams needs a reality check for putting him on the field in the first place. He should be subject to extra training until fit enough to do the job he is being well paid to do.

  • The problem was not Olsson, it was our failure to cut out the supply. Wolves were able to play La Parra in at will with nobody stopping them in midfield. Any full back in any league would have struggled with his pace. We have similar pace up front in Redmond. How did Wolves stop us using his pace?....simple, they cut out the supply, we did not.

  • Why do people keep banging on about 'fitness issues'? Olsson sadly was just outpaced. It's got nothing to do with fitness. If a guy is faster than you then he is simply faster. You have to compensate by positional play or support from your centre half coming across behind you. Being fitter does not make you faster and no matter how fit he is\was La Parra would still be faster than him.

  • good points jonnyp - add Fer, Hooper, Howson, Pilkington, Bassong and Becchio (not to mention Garrido, Tettey & R Bennett) into the mix and NA should have some real competition for first team places. We can't afford to hang about in this league with so-so performances like we did on Sunday - we have got to be tearing teams apart and this has to start with the next game !!

  • Lets get real here, Olsson hardly made contact with the Ref, his gesture was obviously one of abject frustration - give the guy a break, his first card looked rather unjust, as he appeared to have won the ball. Then he 'seemed to kick out at a water-bottle as he headed for the dressing room' - what ?? It looked to me as if the water bottle had been thrown in his direction and he diverted it away. Look at his disciplinary record - he is hardly a villain, in fact I don't think he has even bitten anyone on the field of play - ever !

  • Well as I said on another posting first yellow was a poor decision but you have to take these things and move on - maybe he can get his fitness sorted out on this break!! He is a good LB as seen last season. Hopefully NA can fully reflect on poor lightweight midfield selection and leaving Tettey on the bench, I will repeat one point hopefully the board realise the importance of Fer, Hooper & Howson!! Ruddy looked fine in goal but in front of him, well - NA the Bassong situation needs sorting. OTBC

  • Sorry LYB. I agree with you, hence I think we should accept it and move on. A tad harsh, well very harsh, for the first yellow. So what for the second. But the day you start pushing refs is the day it's gone too far. If that's hysteria, well include me out, as a famous person once said. Not the game of respect I used to like.

  • The hysteria of the comments on here would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. He had a bad day. Shouldn't have been a red as he shouldn't have had the first yellow, but it was and he should have held his temper and not made it worse, but he did. That's life, move on. Garrido's probably chomping at the bit to get himself back in contention and he's not a bad player, if a little lacking in pace.

  • I'm sorry Norwich look lightweight visually. You cannot play a diamond formation with shorty midfielders, who cannot jump high enough to defend attacking set plays.(goals conceded last season and this new one.Bl....y obvious to a non football fan like me

  • Please tell me the club won't waste everyone's time and our credibility by contesting this. First yellow - seemed very harsh. Second yellow, OK in this day and age, but not in my playing days. Pushing a ref - no, you don't do that, and never did (and you can't push a little bit). As an aside, now that I think HR legislation doesn't permit you to deduct or withhold salary, I assume "suspended" really means "suspended on full pay", ie gets more than I do in a fortnight in light training than I get in a year for, er, light work?

  • Olsson was as disappointing as the rest of the defence. On this form he won't be much missed. Garrido is just as slow. Elliott Bennett or Surman might be a better bet at the back. Our best defender, Ryan Bennett, should be a regular selection and Whittaker will surely make way now for Martin, who is not a centre back.
