Norwich centre-back Michael Turner feels he can forge another formidable Premier League partnership with Sebastien Bassong this season.
Chris Hughton paired the duo together for the first time in the new campaign in the 1-0 top flight win over Southampton prior to the international break after an injury-disrupted summer that saw both undergo surgery and miss the club’s USA tour.
Turner recovered from a difficult start to his City career after moving from Sunderland and the defender attributes part of that transition to operating alongside player-of-the-year Bassong.
“It just seemed to click together and we complement each other’s game. I think we enjoy playing alongside each other. Seb is a very good player and he proved that last season,” said Turner. “For me its just about playing. I started the first game of the season and I know if I stay in the team and am playing regularly then I will put in consistent performances that have kept me in the Premier League for nearly six years now. I was pleased with how my first year went to be honest. I played regularly and I felt I performed consistently well and brought something to the side during the good run we had. I managed to score a few goals as well and if I play games this season I will look to pick up a few more.”
Turner endured a frustrating end to the Canaries’ successful season after suffering groin and shoulder injuries that also ruled him out of the club’s July trip to the American west coast.
“I don’t think there were any real disadvantages from missing the tour,” he said. “The boys had a long trip and there was quite a lot of travelling. For me, I wasn’t fit at the time so I gave myself those two weeks to get ready for when they came back. It was ideal. I had to have something cleared up that was causing me a problem last year. It went well. I got the operations done over the summer which gave me a couple of months to get myself right for the start of the season. I feel really strong at the moment.
“It was disappointing not to be involved in crucial games at the end of last season but the team did a great job to finish it off. It showed perhaps what we have in this group of players and the manager added to that over the summer. There was a great team spirit here anyway and the new players just add to that.”
