Norwich City club captain Russell Martin aims to play a leading role in guiding Scotland to the European Championship finals.

Martin played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s impressive 1-0 friendly away win over group opponents Poland which stretched Gordan Strachan’s squad’s unbeaten run to five matches. The 28-year-old has forced his way into Strachan’s starting line-up over the past 12 months at centre back alongside Blackburn’s Grant Hanley, who missed the victory in Warsaw, but Martin is taking nothing for granted.

“I feel like I have put myself in a lot better position now with the performances I have had for the manager and we have done okay and played well,” he said. “Myself and Grant were the preferred choice for the last few games and we have kept a few clean sheets and done well. The relationship is still building and it is something I have worked extremely hard at. I had to be patient for it and it is not one I want to give up easily now, but that is the same as playing in the Premier League. The minute you stand still you get overtaken so you have to work hard, especially when my game is built on working hard. I want to keep improving and that will never change.”

Martin is unfazed by the prospect of trying to qualify from a group that includes Germany, the Poles and some familiar faces as part of the Republic of Ireland set-up.

“Wes (Hoolahan) has already said we have got no chance so we’ll see about that,” said Martin. “I am confident. It is an exciting one that is for sure. The manager came out and said it is probably a group a lot of people will take an interest in. Germany are the outstanding candidates, obviously, but who is to say we can’t get a positive result against them?

“It is going to be really interesting that fight for second and third place because one team has to miss out. The way we are progressing under Gordon Strachan I really feel we have a chance to play in a major tournament and it is one the country deserves. Now is the time for everyone to stake a claim and make sure you are in the starting XI for when some massive games come along against Germany and Ireland. It is one I want to be involved in.”

  • Crickey! Wes told Russell Martin Scotland have no chance! Ban him from the club for life, least thats how some silly billys would look at it. He had a good game for Ireland before Pilks replaced him. Hopefully he continues Saturday with another good performance that will silence the pub talk chinese whisper lovers. On Topic with Russell Martin its funny how old Gordon favours Russ at Centre back even saying he needs to play there more at club level to enhance his international chances. I personally dont favour Russell there. Good cover and never lets us down but I wouldnt have him ahead of Bassong, Yobo, Bennett or Turner. Respect other people will disagree but I still think despite his off form performances hes better at Right back than Centre back. Ultimately right back should be one of the areas we need to improve should we stay in the Premier League. If we go down Martin is one of the first names on the team sheet. IMO anyway.

  • Crickey, sharky, Archie has been nigh on impossible today. Just as I was getting into the swing of agreeing with you, too. Ironic. Steely, was that `Strange Brew` Cream Stout? Nth attempt to correspond. :-(

  • How about "Scottish International Russell Martin targets an instant return to the Premiership for Norwich City"? I expect "Gordan" Strachan will still pick him for Scotland anyway. And Robert, of course.

  • Steely, Archie has made it very difficult for me to contribute just lately. You`d think Strange Brew would be the Cream Stout of their clientele. That Hoolahan snippet is bizarre, though not illogical. Wes should be hightailing it out of Hughton Hell double quick. The match report I saw said that Wes had an early goal incorrectly disallowed. He is a bright, lively player with much to offer. He deserves a few seasons playing proper football. So, if Hughton & cohorts go, Wes could stay? Or is it too late? It could be `Goodbye`.

  • Strange Brew today's Telegraph match report on the Republic's match has under the team listings - Hoolahan (Aston Villa). Maybe a close season agreement has been reached. Sounds like he had a decent enough game for them as well.

  • Saw the headline and thought , ok he's never going to have european success at NCFC under the current leaders, but is Scotland the best he can do; could there be a way for him to become Belgian under a little used euro regulation where the surname can become phonetically like a foriegn name . Welcome Russell Maertins.
