Chris Hughton is confident Norwich can still hit the 40-point mark widely regarded as the barometer for Premier League survival.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

No club has been relegated from the top flight in the last decade with that number of points, and City moved onto 28 with 11 games left after a 1-0 weekend win over Spurs at Carrow Road.

Hughton is keeping his own target under wraps, but the City boss believes the Canaries must go flat out to avoid becoming embroiled in a relegation dogfight.

“I think we’ve all got our own private thoughts but no-one really knows what it will take,” he said. “That makes you want to go full tilt at every game. As much as I say it is about our own results you are conscious of the results around you and for one weekend when they might go well for you, on another it can turn again so we have to make sure we look after our own business. I think that (40 points) is attainable and you always have to believe it is possible. What it will ultimately take, points-wise, I do not know. We will go into every game feeling we can get something. Last season in our two highest pressure games we delivered when most would not have expected us to.”

Hughton is convinced Norwich’s squad have the quality to secure another season of Premier League football.

“Do I have any doubts we are good enough to stay up? I don’t think you can,” he said. “I think you have to have that belief. It is a great challenge for us and also those eight or nine other teams in these last 11 matches. If we show that character and quality we showed against Tottenham then we have a chance. Certainly I would be more concerned if the level of performance hadn’t been what it has been in recent games.”

  • Pretty good analyses here I think TK and Mathias. We need three wins out of the next 6 games but any losses are going to lead wear on the finger nails. If we are fighting for points in the last four games then it will be a white-knuckle ride all the way to the Casualty Department.

  • With about ten minutes to go against Spurs, I and a few others around me were suggesting the Fer looked spent as he had run his socks off so we would then have introduced Howson at that point. If the same team starts against Villa, and they certainly earned the right to do so, then perhaps that could be the way to go depending on the score at the time. Wes offers something slightly different to Howson in the hole as he is a better passer of the ball but not such a good shot taker. For me Wes suits the diamond formation better with two strikers to feed rather than just one. The alternative is to try three centre backs but I doubt CH would risk that at present.

  • There is little doubt that we have the players to get over 40 points but the team and the manager always seem to come up short against their nearest rivals. We have played very well against some of the big boys, including AFC, Man Utd, Man City and Spursbut when the chips are really down give away soft goals against our real rivals. Next Sunday will certainly be the real barometer, a draw will say maybe and a win will say more likely.

  • Stoke, Sunderland and West Brom are coming to Carrow Road. Those three are our best chances of wins. We've got a few winnable away games as well. Get three wins out of that lot and a few draws out of the remaining 11 and we're there.

  • Yes, Mattias, it is very much down to consistency. Our record so far this season has been to have one good game and result but haven't ever followed it up with another good performance. This has to change and to do so somehow we need to score goals. Obvious but a fact. For me Hooper looks by far the better of the three options up front. RvW is so short of confidence that at present I feel he is a massive gamble. As for the fourth, Becchio, as so many have said here, he hasn't had a chance to show if he's capable of scoring at this level. The sooner we get Howson back the better. He does make a difference. Perhaps playing Hoolahan would also give Hooper more serviced, certainly through the middle.

  • On paper we need to beat Stoke, Sunderland and West Brom. But given how they're all fighting relegation. They'll shut up shop and be hard to breakdown. We need to find points away from home if we want to stay up. Swansea, Southampton and Villa will play more open and attacking football. It those games where we need to pick up points. Wes to get the winner against Villa? I think 35-38 points will be enough this season. Quite a few of those teams still have to play each other including ourselves. But given our poor goals against we need a few clean sheets and and a couple of 2 or 3 nil wins. Lets hope the tittle is decided soon. Who knows maybe the big clubs will rest star players given the World Cup isn't far away.

Quite simply because thats the only game where your never quite sure his head would be right for it. All othe matches you know he would be up for it even if he didnt end up playing well, you just know he would give 100% but that game he might not or alternatively, try to hard to impress that he could make mistakes. - As for our points tally. I think we will have 40 points by the end of March, I really do.. Thats 4 games in a row now that we have played well. OK we havnt accumulated the points that we should have done but anly poor finishing and good opposition goalkeeping has thwarted that. Thats why I think with getting more of our squad fit now, that we will start to turn draws into wins and defeats into draws

  • I had us down as getting 36 points before the Spurs win (because I had the Spurs game as a win already) so I wont be changing my mind now. Hopefully im wrong and we surpass that. 3 massive home games: Stoke, Sunderland & WBA. We need to turn that corner and consistently beat our rivals. Its positive putting in good displays against Man C, Man U & Spurs regardless whether you win, lose or draw but its in the games where you can gain points off your rivals where it really counts. Anything else like Spurs is just a (massive) bonus. Personally im quite optimistic (by my standards). I can see 2 x wins & a draw from those 3 huge games. Ideally need 3 wins as IMO the other games are all risky, up in the air ones. Will we go away to Villa, Swansea etc...and pick up points? Certainly need to! People are writing off the last 5 (ive inc Fulham as they've proved just as hard for us to win at as any top side) games, but surely we can spring a surprise somewhere within all those games. Im looking at the AFC home game as the one with potential. All depends if AFC are out of the title race and under no pressure for a top 4. Going to Villa an getting something will go along way to helping us survive even if its just a draw. Momentum, confidence & consistency. Turn up and no show as we've done so many times after such a positive performance and i'll be right back in depression corner.

When we play are relegation rivals i'd be more in favour of just 1 DMC in Tettey, with Howson & Fer ahead which worked well against Stoke etc. However Johnson despite being the worst technically out of the bench has been playing out of his skin lately and quite rightly it would be harsh should he get left out. Some tough choices for Hughton to make there, but good problems to have, having quality in form players to choose from. Im pretty sure we will name an unchanged line up for Villa. Could be the right thing to do away from home as well against a very attacking Lambert side.
