Norwich City chief executive David McNally says the club is in the process of building its squad – not selling off prized assets.

The Canaries chief insists the club has received no transfer requests from any members of the squad and isn’t interested in selling any of manager Chris Hughton’s senior players.

Speculation that Wes Hoolahan had served notice of his intention to leave Carrow Road to link up with former boss Paul Lambert reached fever pitch on Tuesday evening. Lambert has made no secret of the fact he is looking for “a number 10” during the January transfer window and is rumoured to have tabled a £750,000 bid for the fans’ favourite.

However, Norwich are keen to keep Hoolahan, who missed Saturday’s FA Cup tie through injury, and McNally is only interested in attracting players to Carrow Road.

“The club’s focus is on improving the squad during this transfer window,” he told the club’s official website. “As we’ve always said, no players will be sold against our will.

“We’ve received no transfer requests this season and have no intention of releasing any of our senior players.

“Our focus this January, as with every transfer window, is very much on improving the squad.”

McNally’s comments also mean that Luciano Becchio is likely to remain at City despite interest from several Championship sides.

The Argentine striker’s limited involvement since moving from Leeds last January has caught the attention of Championship clubs, Blackburn and Derby.

But City appear determined to keep Becchio, who has voiced his frustration in the past at his lack of first team action.

  • Good to see McNally coming out and making this statement and making clear the clubs policy on the transfer of senior players and hopefully confirming Wes Hoolahan is staying with NCFC. I would be grateful if he would now confirm what is the situation with Chris Hughton are the board sticking with him until the end of the season no matter what, or even maybe to the end of his contract. I think it only fair to say now before season ticket renewal.

  • Sorry Canary on the moon but I think if McNally thought it necessary to make clear the situation on Wes Hoolahan surly it stands to reason he should do the same over Chris Hughton when you take into account the pressure he has been under.

  • …..And that's how it should be!.....BUT it stands to reason that if some new player joins us ...some one else MAY have to leave!.... NOT Wes though!.....

  • To be fair David McNally never said they hadn't recieved an offer for Wes in his statement. He covered that no transfer request has been handed in and the player wont be leaving etc....but thats usual course of action in these cases by clubs. It what in the old days the manager would come out and say. Ultimately I dont think he will go. I dont for a second believe he will suddenly be used as much as he should be here either as Hughton has got his beliefs in how the game should be played and like any manager he isn't going to change that for nobody.

  • Good to see McNally come out and explain the clubs position on selling senior players and the position on Wes Hoolahan. Would he now be kind enough to tell the fans if he is sticking with the manager to the end of the season or even to the end of his contract, could this please be done before season ticket renewal date.

  • Right that's the end of that. Now lets get behind CH and Norwich. All this hate towards CH is getting a bit much, I know results haven't gone our way but they need our support. We are still in the Premier league and its our support that can make a difference at the end of the season. OTBC.

  • Thank goodness for that - I thought McNally had been away on a long holiday. The best way he could improve the current squad would be to get rid of Hughton and his coaches.

  • Right now we have a 22 man squad if you discount Ayala, therefore we can bring in three additional players without needing to part with any. A target man and another central defender would do to start.

  • No statement is necessary regarding Chris Hughton. Making statements only fans the flames. They're starving the Hughton out campaign of oxygen by ignoring it.

  • I see Elmander's contract with Galatasery is up in the summer, I wonder if he is going to stay on a free. He get a lot of stick but he is a hard working support striker. If a offer for Becchio comes in then for his sake I hope we take it

  • Agreed Mellow. The signing of Hoolahan would hardly go down well with Villa Supporters either. They will associate everything coming from NCFC as a total failure at the moment and will not want another one. As reported in the papers PL is leaving the pitch to a chorus of boos at every home game. He also had tickets torn up and thrown in his face at the end of the FA Cup debacle.

  • HATE !! what hate ??I certainly dont hate Hughton . I just do not want him managing the club any longer , its all going to end in tears if they are allowed to continue but even if there is a change i fear the damage is already done . Its just not happening this season for us and if it wasnt for our ten match unbeaten run last season we would have gone down then !! lets be honest ..... can ANYONE really see an enough of an improvement from now on to see us through with all that has gone before? other clubs are being pro active we just seem to be hoping !!

Whilst we always knew he was a bit of a cold fish I never thought he was this daft! OTBC!!
