Norwich City club captain Russell Martin has undergone surgery this summer – but it should not affect his preparations for next season.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The 28-year-old defender missed Scotland’s recent internationals due to injury, and City boss Neil Adams revealed a hernia was a root of Martin’s problem.

The skipper is already back at Colney ensuring he will be ready for City’s pre-season schedule – something that still remains in the dark to Canaries fans.

“One or two players have been in doing extras – Elliott Bennett, and Russell has just had a little hernia operation,” said Adams. “It was one where, did we leave him? It wasn’t impeding him too much. He wasn’t in too much pain, but we decided to do it really early and you’re talking two weeks after the operation now, so he’s got plenty of time.

“He’s back on the treadmills so it’s no problem at all for him.”

Left-back Martin Olsson had been scheduled for a summer operation to sort a shoulder problem, according to reports earlier in the year. However, in the midst of speculation linking the Swede to a Premier League return with West Ham, Adams admitted Olsson is yet to go under the knife.

“I don’t think he’s had it done yet,” said Adams. “He played through the season with it and it wasn’t an absolutely essential operation. It’s one to sit down with the physios and decide, because that would be a longer term one.

“As we saw through the season he had problems with it, but he could pop it back in and he was ready to go again.”

While City fans know the Championship season starts on August 9, so far the club’s pre-season schedule – apart from a possible friendly at French side Nantes – remains under wraps.

“What we wouldn’t want to do is announce we’re playing a certain team and have to change it,” added Adams. “But it’s pretty much done and dusted. I think the club will be announcing it as soon as possible – within a week, with a bit of luck.

“The rest of the players are all in on June 26 and 27 for individual testing, when we put them through the mill and see how fresh they are before pre-season itself. June 30 is the first big day when everyone is back in, but I’ll be speaking to the players when they come in for those tests, or as and when.

“I’ve phoned one or two in the past week or so, but it’s their break now and they’ve all got their return date.”

  • It shows exactly where Villa are at, shopping destination wise. Free transfers. Fully appreciate the fact without Vlaar they were inexperienced at the back last season, but Senderos with his clanger per game reputation? Really? Then add the fact NCFC rejected their laughable Hoolahan offer and as a result to go for Joe Cole, it only goes to back up my opinion they very well could be relegated this coming season. Ill certainly be sticking a little bit on that with the bookies either way. Their fans wont accept signings like Cole & Senderos. Most of their fans still believe they are european champions the way they go on. Lambert sacked by Xmas, replaced by Roy Keane. Superb :)

  • Fair comment, waclor! My next-door neighbours had a dog called Ben. He was a sort of gingery\sandy colour (dog, not neighbour); I think he was a golden labrador or suchlike. I confess to exempting him from my acute canisophobia. He was a `gentleman among dogs` but, sadly, he had to be separated from his mortal coil a few weeks ago. Neighbours had had him from a pup. I think he was about 16 yrs old. I acted as a "pall bearer" to carry his earthly remains to the vet`s car. :-( Other than pavement fouling, which is getting worse, I find dogs a nuisance in pubs, specially when they are allowed to use the seating intended for paying humans. Also, those that lie in wait in a parked car before releasing a salvo of aggressive, phrenetic barking at a passing innocent (like me!). I`m sure your Harry might be a gentleman dog. Just remember, if you elect to keel over and die while alone with him, your manicured Emmerdale-watcher might return home to find he`s started eating you!! ;-). To Mattias; painful things, dislocated shoulders. I hope Adams DOES know what`s going on! Off-topic (!), Beebgossip reports that Villa have signed Joe Cole on a freebie. Whither Wesley now? Btw; Lambert & Keane should be billed as "The Walker Brothers". No Regrets, Villa? The Sun Ain`t Gonna Shine Any More....

Spent enough time in hospitals without going in for a shoulder op. Sure this isnt the attitude of Olsson though. Just odd comment from Adams making it sound like he hasnt a clue whats going on at the club hes in charge of.

  • Dogs exist Bre because they do. Why do they live with human beings? They have many advantages over other living companions: they don't steal your alcohol, they never watch soaps or any other daft programme when there's football on the telly and they don't hog the computer to find a cheaper source of nail varnish remover. Generally they are also much more intelligent than humans. To prove this I have not found a single dog who supports ITFC or who thinks Hughton was an adequate manager for a football club (or a stall at a jumble sale).

  • Can't see too many of our players leaving, as no one would want them anyway after the appalling displays last season. Sounds like John Ruddy wants to stay and as for Snodddy - where to ? Hull were the surprise package last season under the now slim & lightweight Brucie, and are unlikely to achieve a mid-table finish and a Wembley final again next term. If he moved there he could very well be heading for the Chump in a season's time - just when our hot-shots are heading back to the Prem. Funny old game 'eh !

Not at all afraid of them, except the ones that chew your face off when they`re a bit tetchy and you`re asleep, but I just don`t like them, or see the point in their existence. Other than to compete with chewing gum as the most prolific pavement fouler. Sell more gum. It smells better!

  • Ref Olsson - having had a constantly dislocating shoulder , I have to say that if it has been out on several occasions, then it is unlikely to get fixed by a "period of rest". The only solution, especially for a professional sportsman , is surgery. My own shoulder reconstruction was a success and would recommend it to be done to avoid lots of pain or the fear of lots of pain.

  • Funny old thing, dislocation. My brother reminded me recently, that about 55 years ago, he and my mother used to pop my left shoulder into place quite frequently. More recently, about 7 years past, I fell off my Royal Enfield and dislodged the shoulder again. Once rescued and returned to home, a firm grip on the stair rail, and a bit of jumping up and down fixed it. After about 8 bottles of Nelson`s Revenge, I didn`t feel a thing. Though it is still sore and crunches a bit when I move - which, fortunately, is rarely. Poor old MartinO has to play footy. Roll on that Medical Insurance. Lesson: Always keep at least 8 bottles of Nelson`s Revenge in your larder. Just in case. And don`t live in a bungalow. Or have footy-player class Medical Insurance. PS. Hughton. Hughton. Hughton. Is "Houghton" acceptable? ;-)

  • I am sure the cost of an operation for Martin Olsson is not an issue as I am certain that the club have insurance cover for such things to start with. However, a dislocation correction may not be that straightforward and it is possible that medical advice has been given that suggests a period of rest may be all that is required rather than going under the knife. Whatever the outcome, he is one player I hope the club are able to retain for the coming season along with Ruddy that is.

Funny business with Olson as only a few weeks before the end of last season it was alleged thet he was to have an op. to get fit for next season. Perhaps City don't want to pay for the treatment and are expecting to sell him an let some other team pick up the tab. Hope I am wrong because I would love to see him at City for next season. He is a very good player. Perhaps he is also a good family man and wants his holiday first.

  • Spot on, Lobbo! Elliott Bennett has an advantage over most of the others - he wasn`t subjected to his soul being sucked dry by Hugh Trollderwood. He could be a very useful returnee. Perhaps with his comeback, we`ll see a right-footed wide right player? Maybe Benno could fill a midfield role, or even RBack? I`ve long felt that RBk might be the position he develops into. Time will tell. Agree with M333 on the Olsson injury. It seems, from the use of the expression "pops out" that it`s a matter of dislocation? (I wonder if Uncle Joe is beavering away in the background with Macca, using his contacts to set up a useful pre-season). If I`d had voting rights, instead of being one of the irrelevant incognoscenti on the periphery, I would have picked Olsson, too. You might have thought, with a more than competent deputy in Garrido, even somebody as patently dim-witted as Hughton would have had Olsson mended, or at least given him a rest. Couldn`t Chrissy`s pension-filling friend Gutierrez have helped out on the left side of defence? He didn`t seem to be much of a "winger" anyway. Then again, he was `injured` most of the time....

  • Olsson is yet to have his operation? Sounds a odd one as he looked in utter agony at time during the season. Battled on and always played to a good standard in my opinion. Got my vote for Player of the season! Im sure the club know much more than I do, likewise im sure the club isn't as unorganised as these constant articles make out, but it is a concern to me Olsson is yet to have surgery. To me it would seem logical to get it done immediately before the AFC game when we were 100% doomed and give him the best chance of returning ASAP having the whole summer to rest. Especially if the recovery time is longer term as Adams just put it in this article. It would get rid of anyone trying to sign him as well! Instead we will go into the new season from the sounds of it with olsson still injured, in pain and trying to battle on until he likely cant battle on no more and hes forced to go under the knife. By which point Garrido will likely have had enough an moved on and we have no replacement for Olsson and he will miss vital games. Adams quote "I don’t think he’s had it done yet" is equally worrying....surely as manager of the club its a massive part of his job to know these things.....opps sorry its the technical directors job according to McNallys interview the other week, that will explain it.
