Norwich City boss Neil Adams is ready to fight ‘tooth and nail’ to ward off interest in Dutch international Leroy Fer.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The 24-year-old returned to Colney on Friday for the first time this summer after an extended break following his World Cup exploits, but Fer’s club future remains the subject of intense speculation following reports of a rejected bid from QPR and interest from Europa League winners Sevilla.

Adams, speaking after his side’s 1-1 friendly draw in France against SC Bastia, admits City face a battle to keep hold of the powerful midfielder.

“I will fight tooth and nail to keep as many of the ones I want and hopefully add to that,” he said. “Leroy is back in Norwich now and he was at the training ground on Friday. Listen, this is a player who has just played in the World Cup. You look around and a lot of those boys who played in that tournament are going to be in demand. It will be tough to keep him.

“We know that. Leroy has scored a goal in a World Cup finals for a country who were one of the top nations and nearly went all the way.

“People will see him as a Championship player now and perhaps feel they have an opportunity to come and take him off us. We have to do everything we can to keep him here but similar to Robert Snodgrass, if silly money comes in it will be tough. Leroy is an excellent player and we would love to have him in the team.”

Adams revealed City are in no hurry to add a third summer signing following the arrivals of Lewis Grabban and Kyle Lafferty, with the Norwich boss focusing on keeping hold of his key men.

“No, nothing imminent at the minute. We are looking constantly and we are prepared to move if the opportunity presents itself,” he said. “What I would say is the players here who I have spoken to, Wes Hoolahan being one, who many might have felt are ones that could go, are liking it, they are enjoying it and they want to be part of it.”

  • To all thos knocking the ability of Fer, you are not watching the game close enough or know little about positional resposibility. I saw someone comparing him to Wes as a player - that cannot be done as CAM and DMC are polar opposites it terms of what your on the pitch to do and even your physical structure (i.e you think it would be a good idea to play tiny Wes as a DMC?) Bottom line is that he is a full international that has scored at a world cup - i.e our most valuable player.

  • Have a look at my enforced fragmentation of a posting on the "City confirm Livorno friendly cancelled" board. The offending word there was - believe it or not - "SKlLL" ! It gets through here because it is cleverly disguised ;-) - but I too am amazed that DOBBY's adjective describing the weather in his last post should have made it through! (yes I know all the words were misspelt - it doesn't normally make any difference to ACE - the Archie Censorship Engine).

  • Agree with Trevor on the reality of selling Fer for the right money. A player who played and scored for the World Cup semi-finalists Holland is more likely to leave than other players rumoured to be transfer targets for top flight teams.. City need to use the transfer budget wisely to make a promotion push. Too many clubs have been relegated after spending far more than Norwich. These teams use up their parachute payments to balance the books. City have no debts and have more money than teams who have not played in the top flight lately.

  • When push comes to shove, the Dummy & the Pram will often have the last say. If a player thinks he belongs in the big boys playground, he and his agent will do everything to upset the small playground. Fer is a good player but not irreplaceable, if he goes, we just need to make sure we find a suitable replacement for our squad. Ditto some of the other touted players.

For starters selling snodgrass for 8 mill when he was entering his final year, takes spherical shaped things! The doomcaster days would've seen him go for half that..or he would've had some ignorant cheap price get out clause put into his contact and sold for 2 mill...

  • Very concerned we are not aggressively looking at strengthening the backs and midfield with all the money we have from the EPL and Snodgrass. We should be ensuring we have a squad that is so strong that we take the championship easily, instead of just being in the mix. I've said it before - I think our ownership is happy to just be a mid-table championship side and take the money generated from the EPL and player sales.

  • Who would be happier if Leroy departed and we recruited a good centre back and a right back? To me the defence still looks lightweight. Turner is accident prone, Bassong is in a sulk, Bennett is not the finished article yet although he could still improve and Martin is good without ever being dominant. If teh defence was strong enough, perhaps the midfield would have the confidence to push forward.

  • It's the usual money merrigoround! Proven goalscorers always attract the largest transfer fees as they are, like precious metals, in short supply. On the other hand central midfielders and defenders who are capable of doing a decent job are far more numerous which is reflected in their price. However as others have pointed out here, Fer does come with a good cv and has time on his side. So it is hard to equate McCormack's transfer fee with what Norwich might expect for Fer. In the end it will simply be down to market forces: how much a club is prepared to pay to lure him away from Carrow Road. I hope he stays because for me he is an excellent player who like every other was stiffled by Hughton's idiotic tactics. I will be interested on Monday to see how the first signs of Adams' reign pans out on the pitch in terms of commitment to go forward coupled with a good tempo pass and movement approach. Apart from one good central midfielder I think with the right coaching approach we do have a strong squad capable of doing well in the Championship. However I am not going to predict where we will finish up, given there are numerous good strong teams in this league. As they say in Spain vamos a ver (we'll see!).

Since Fer has 3 years remaining on his contract (I think), it would be great if he could at least stay one more year, help get us back up, play more games for the Netherlands. He should `hold his price` if all that happens. Who knows, if we DO get back up, he might even be happy to stay and become a Carra `legend`. Will the board have the resolve? • In some ways I actually prefer the "it's going to take silly money" line. Why? It tells interested parties that we're going to play hard ball and, secondly, it's a message to the players that the club won't roll over and take any offer that comes along. As for EC's question about an equivalent or better replacement, should Fer go, surely the biggest issue is actually being able to attract such a player to the Championship in the first instance? I'd suggest such prospects are remote.

  • What happens if someone comes in with a silly money offer late in the transfer windows? If we're going to sit back now and concentrate on keeping existing players, is there a plan B if we're not entirely successful? Having£20 million in the bank on deadline day is no good if we have a significant gap in the squad, especially given how injury prone we seem at the moment.

  • Agree LYB & ECan. I suppose the Club has to make sure the money really is "silly". With McCormack fetching £11m, Fer`s price has to be above that for starters? Dutch International. World Cup goalscorer. 24 yrs old. 3 years left on his contract.... Good news that Wes is seemingly `up for it`. borderman, I think that thing on 3-Lungs` neck is the `Router` for signals from Machianalli`s Central Control Unit. It`ll be removed once `The Prince` is sure Gary`s got his mind right.

  • I think that is the situation LYB. Obviously NA wants to keep Fer, and he is not exactly forcing a transfer himself. However, if silly money comes in, City will listen. What is more important than the offer is the timing of the offer, what City can do with the money in that time, and indeed will NA be given that money ? Although City sometimes talk the talk, they don't always walk the walk when it comes to ins and outs. Put it this way, if Fer does go, will we get in an equivalent or a better replacement ? I think most of us know the likely outcome to that one........and so does NA.

  • This sort of reads to me as 'we want to keep him, but everyone has his price'. Snodgrass going with only a year left was fair enough, but I'm worried that Leroy going would open the floodgates. Unless he's actively agitating to get away the club should not be even considering it.
