Norwich City aim to deliver a statement of intent at Wolves but Neil Adams insists there is so much more to his all-out attacking philosophy.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries’ have played with a refreshing freedom during the build- up, in stark contrast to last season’s struggles in front of goal, yet Adams is aware of the limitations to such a bold strategy.

“It’s about getting the balance right,” he said. “Wolves like to play in a similar manner so I don’t think either team throughout this coming season will look to defend and do nothing else. To be successful in this division you need to score goals. Of course that doesn’t mean you throw caution to the wind and risk losing games before you have a foothold.

“You have to get the balance right, with the emphasis on attacking, scoring goals and dominating the ball. You also have to be ready to defend as and when, because we will be tested. We know there are things we have to work on and we have for seven weeks now, but we won’t get back in the Premier League if we don’t score enough goals.”

Adams witnessed first hand the potential degree of difficulty from Sunday’s televised test by making a Molineux spying trip last weekend.

“They played Celta Vigo the day after they played us and you can see why they were promoted. They are a good side, well-organised, and they have a style of play and a philosophy that suits them,” he said. “It will be a tough game but I am anticipating 46 tough ones. I have told the players some of the promoted sides are under-rated and similarly relegated sides are perhaps over-rated. That doesn’t mean I don’t rate my players. The point I make is we will have to earn it.

“To meet on day one will be interesting. They are in the Championship on merit. They were excellent in League One and they are a good side and so are we. That wasn’t shown last season but we have a good, core group who are capable of competing really well in this division. The key thing for us is you respect the opposition but they have to respect us equally because we are going to be positive in every game to try and get as many points and victories as we can.”

City’s chief insists he has not suffered sleepless nights settling on his starting line up for the first league encounter.

“I know what I want to do. We have been working on it all week,” he said. “It’s always difficult because we have top players here and you can only start with 11. I’ve heard managers saying it is harder to pick your bench and I would agree with them. The starting 11, if its winning, takes care of itself but there will be a lot of disappointment if players are not even making the bench. That is a great problem to have. You want quality and competition for places.”

  • Norwich Abs, Why do we sense over confidence if not a huge chunk of arrogance in your posts? Like most Budgie followers you expect automatic promotion. You may be disappointed with NA in charge. We are sure you really are Looking forward (with confidence) to meeting one of those 'weak' Championship forward lines in two weeks time...

  • Understandable reminder of the disappointment of relegation to the Championship and concerns that the league is very competitive. City should be good enough for the play-offs. Whatever happens there will be a lot more English and other UK players to watch. Unlike the mainly foreign players turning out for the Community Shield.

  • Hi Oz Canary TU I feel I will do the same as you take a year out, same status before we went into the PL. I have tried a couple of links others very kindly recommended, but in all cases my Malware blocked access with warnings appearing everywhere. Last year I did not get up at 2.30 I would record the game and before switching any news on about 5.30 am I would replay the games unfortunately due to last years performances it was not very often satisfying. Hoping for a return to the PL. For info I have been an active supporter for 70 years, there will be others back in Norfolk longer than this, A lifetime supporter for our Canaries.

One stat I am looking out for is NA's win ratio moving off zero because 0% after 6 games would not read well. Bogaz John, you hope Elliott is playing. I hope Wes is playing or some fur will be flying. However, is this this one of those games that is too big for him? Opening fixture, desperate need to hit the ground running, away to former league champions? You never know. By the way, why "Lincs?" after Canary Girl. Do you think I am her?

  • Well, I've not felt this confident for some time now, but I am looking forward to the season and what I hope to be a very successful one! I like the fact that NA is being balanced in his assessment and realises that it might not all come together straight away. Now its down to the players and they do have a statement to make not only to themselves but to the fans at large as well. A good result today will set us on the road; but we musn't be too critical if the game doesn't quite go our way. This is a new management setup and new tactics. And a lot of positivity also which is great. It will take awhile for them all to gel. But I've liked what I have seen so far and I think we can go into this season with optimism and confidence. OTBC and never mind the danger. Onwards and upwards!!

  • I can't wait to get to the pub to see this match this afternoon. Haven't been this chipper since pre-Hughton. Whatever Kenny Jackett says, Wolves were in the old third division last season and we, unlike the Fulham patsies at Portaloo Road yesterday, have retained most of an experienced Premiership squad. Yes we got relegated but trying to keep the score down every week against the likes of Aguero and Suarez is different to facing the "might" of the forwards of Rotherham and 1p5wich. OTBC.

All three results are realistic possibilities at Molineux. Ipswich had a great result and are play off contenders but are likely to fall short - unlucky 13th season in Championship for them. City need to prove they are Pride of Anglia, starting this afternoon.

NCFC should be aiming for 100+ Points and a GD of +70 (100+ goals for and max of 30 against). Realistically, that is 2.17391304348 points per game and the same number of goals too, should be a doddle !

Plus the Missus had enough of me being tired and grumpy the next day! I'll try and download the game the following day. I imagine you could stream the game live via AsiaU.S or Europe networks. You might need to hide your I.P location with some software or go via a website which will hide your location for you. Fraser Foster to S'ton to link up with Dave Watson, that might not be good for big John's England cause. Overall I am excited about the type of football that we are now seeing compared to the last two years of misery.

Too much of a technophobe to advance beyond Freeview or learn how to "stream" stuff on my computer. Even though I qualify for `free` BT Sport, I cannot be doing with the hassle of sorting out a "Sky Platform" whatever that means. I satisfy myself with the wireless and a Thermos of Bovril. With my eyes closed, I can imagine standing on the terraces at the River End watching Tommy Bryceland & Mal Lucas weave their brand of footy magic, and Kevin Keelan entertaining us with his acrobatics...

  • That`s the ticket, Dubya!! Full-on Pollyannary. I was getting concerned that you may be developing a pessimistic (realistic..) streak, but you`ve been on the `Potion`, haven`t you? Good man. I did analyse last season`s Champ table and made some conclusions about scoring\conceding, but I`ve forgotten what they were now. We need to do better than 28, for sure, and I don`t mean by dint of the 8 extra games. 80F - 45A - 85pts would probably do the trick. Simples then, improve from a strike rate of 0.74 goals per game to 1.74. Easy-peasy... Wolves had a very niggardly defence in L1; 30-odd goals conceded. Beebgossip has it that the Yam yams have 4 players ruled out injured. For us, Hooper is still `doubtful`. Not a lot of striker cover just now. Oh, for a really good start; good performance matched by a good result. Remember, even the Great Lambo suffered an opening day defeat vs Watford. Then look what happened! Didn`t we come 2nd with 84 pts that season? OTBC!! IAWT!!! ;-)

He has worked miracles with what scant resources he has at Portaloo Lane. Compare and contrast Chrissy "King Midas in Reverse" Hughton. Neil needs to emulate Lambo - get the players to perform "above themselves". No room for prima donnas or slackers. Or players who get fat during the Summer break...

McCarthy doesn't know what he is talking about, Fulham had no less than EIGHT new young players in their starting line-up yesterday. How can that have anything to do with the Premiere League - they are a new team playing their first competitive game together. To have come unstuck against the frightfully poor team at Portaloo Road was a blow, but they will bounce back, I certainly wouldn't right them off just yet !

They were woeful yesterday and will never be gifted two easier goals. Wish we could have played Fulham yesterday - but, they will improve I am sure. What we need to do is make a strong statement today and win well, and score a few goals. Important to set down an early marker of intent - City have to take the Chump by storm !

  • On the basis of watching the Celta Vigo game from the Jarrold Stand. I'd say we haven't got the balance right just yet. Our defence is still exposed against pace especially Martin and Turner. Our Midfield still can't dominate and control a game mainly because they can't keep possession under pressure. Our Defence-Midfield link up play isn't good enough, putting us back under unnecessary pressure. Redmond hasn't advanced since joining from Birmingham and if he doesn't this season then I don't think he will. Ruddy looks all too comfortable and not the player of two seasons ago. I don't think it's going to be a walk in the park as most people think. Come the end of the season I think Derby, Watford and Ipswich will all be in the mix. Given the amount of managers with more experience than our management team, it's not going to be easy. Interesting that Wolves drew 1-1 against Celta Vigo as well.
