Chris Hughton will leave the number-crunching to others as he looks to secure Norwich City’s Premier League status.
The Canaries are embroiled in what promises to be another tense survival battle over the run-in but Hughton does not have a final points target in mind to secure a fourth consecutive season of top flight football.
“There might be times you do think about it but we just don’t know. All your efforts and what you do on a day to day basis must be focused on the games,” he said. “I don’t know what it will take, but I am still confident and you have to be. It is important that no-one here panics. We were in a similar position towards the end of last season and we managed to finish in 11th place. That shows you when it’s tight what can happen.
“There was a period towards the end of last season when it was equally tight and at one stage I think any of seven clubs could have gone down. It is only us who can get ourselves out of this position. We just have to make sure we show the good things about our play and we need to because the games won’t get any easier.
“It will always be about the teams who are more resilient and keep their nerve and have belief in each other. You need quality, you need to be able to put the ball in the net but you also need those qualities as well.”
Hughton’s side must try and halt Manchester City’s title charge this weekend and the Norwich boss wants no repeat of the defensive leaks that gifted Cardiff a 2-1 Premier League win.
“It is a shame because we had been on the back of two clean sheets, albeit we didn’t get the performance we wanted in the first half against Newcastle, so that was unlike us in recent games,” he said. “Probably parts of the game sum up our season. It was one that has got away from us and I am left scratching my head how we let it happen. You have to look at the positives. We made two errors but attacking-wise we showed some quality and certainly created chances and got the ball into the right areas. There was no lack of effort or determination and we will need that for the rest of the season.”
