Norwich City boss Chris Hughton insists the better side lost after Manchester United 1-0 Premier League defeat

Chris Hughton was adamant Norwich City deserved much more than a second festive home Premier League defeat after Manchester United substitute Danny Welbeck proved the difference at Carrow Road with a coolly-taken 57th minute winner.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

City were unable to find a way past David De Gea in a positive first half and paid a heavy price when Welbeck rounded John Ruddy after gathering Ryan Bennett’s attempted clearance which had ricocheted back into the England striker’s path.

“It feels really sickening. It is a game we didn’t deserve to lose. I thought we were magnificent right throughout game,” said Hughton. “Their winner was a fortuitous goal with the double deflection which ran into the path of Danny Welbeck. When that falls to someone like him you are almost expecting him to score. That was the only difference between the two teams. I thought we were better over the 90 minutes, we got into better positions and better areas.

“Our organisation was excellent and we had some good chances. On the balance of play, defeat is a tough one to take. So many aspects of our game today were very good. But goals win games, and their goal was fortunate. That is the game. When you have your best period you have to try and capitalise on it and we didn’t do that and with the changes and the quality they can bring on you know what could happen. But even in the second half I thought we were good. They threatened on the counter.”

Hughton confirmed Gary Hooper was withdrawn as a precautionary measure in the second period after complaining of a tightness in his leg at the interval - a decision which sparked a predictably hostile reaction from the majority within Carrow Road.

“He flagged it up at half-time and that was a precaution from us,” he said. “We have a lot of games in this period and we have to look at the bigger picture. It was an injury precaution. He is fine. Just a little bit of tightness that he flagged up. I understand the fans’ frustration at that point because he had scored in four of our last home games. They weren’t aware of the whole story and I am quite sure if they were the reaction would have been different, but I had no problem with that.”

  • I was frustrated by the team selection again yesterday, but to be fair we actually played well for much of the game. I was one of those who booed when Hooper was substituted as I felt that the only way back was to go with two up front. The wrong sided wingers have never worked for us this season and Hoolahan looks far better at providing telling forward passes, therefore the sensible thing to have done would surely have been to take Redmond off on the basis that he cannot drop back to play in a three man central midfield whereas Snodgrass can, albeit not perfectly. I was expecting a heavy defeat but the real opposition did not turn up to our advantage, however another 3 points escaped us at home. I cannot see us getting anything from the Palace either, as I have never seen us played well down there. I do not think CH was a bad choice at the time but I think it is time to try someone new. No there is no certainty that a new man will work any better but at least we could give the dice a roll and hope lady luck turns once again. After all, who though Lambert was going to produce what he did, very few I suspect.

  • No matter how good this perfomance, The fact remains that if we lose at Palace, the chances are that we will be in the bottom three, and that is where we deserve to be.Until such time as the board stick their heads above the parapet and admit they got Hughton and his muppets appointment totally wrong, we are on a rapid slide to the Championship. Defenders who can't defend, strikers who can't score goals, cack handed wingers, late and useless substitutions usually to try and defend an already lost cause. Some people on this site delight in revelling in Lamberts struggle at Villa, I prefer to remember what he and Culverhouse achieved in their tenure here. I looked forward to going to games, and win or lose I knew that the team would give of their best, and Captain Marvel Holt would run through a brick wall for us. Enter Hughton and cronies who disillusioned our scoring talisman, coached every bit of fight and flair out of our team. Some of you still defend a man who isnt really fit to manage a pub team along with his even worse backroom staff, and who is ripping the heart out of players and fans alike on our way down. He is effectively ruining everything achieved before his arrival, and I for one cannot wait for the day he leaves

  • If we come away with another defeat against Crystal Palace on New Year's day, I am sure that the board will act fast to replace Hughton. Just look how Steve Bruce has galvanised Hull City. Even Pulis has Palace playing more cohesively. We seem to have too many off days or "unlucky" days. The table doesn't lie at this stage of the season.

Both teams likely to still be in the same division at the end of the season. What the Canaries need to do is to play wingers in the normal positions and make the best use of substitutes during games and the squad overall.

  • Oh please sharkey and the rest of the happy clappers. Look at Lamberts record at this club and be grateful for what he achieved for us, then compare that record to the present incompetent crew that are presently undoing all the good work that Lambert and Culverhouse did for us. Now we are continually sublected to dross football from a negative coaching team with no idea of how to galvanise what are essentially good players, a stubborn insistence in playing wingers on the wrong side and substitutions that are normally to protect whatever deficit we have attained. Look at the Palace effort against Man. City and realise that sometimes it is better to actually try to win a game rather than not lose by too many. Yes the performance today was better but then that was not hard too better the Fulham (who were hammered 6-0 by the mighty Hull today) performance, and we still lost. At the end of the day, judge Hughton and his pathetic sidekicks in terms of goals scored, goals conceded, overall style of play and the fact that if Palace beat us on New Years Day we will be where we deserve to be.... in the bottom three.

They are clearly a club that is attempting to punch way above their weight and it has now become pitiful to watch. I can't blame Houghton for trying to convince gullible fans that they were unlucky today. Man Utd's performance was woeful but they still won. Who can blame him for attempting to suggest that Norwich were the better side? After all, he's under the cosh isn't he? It's like watching an incompetent boxer getting beaten up round after round. The towel has to be thrown in to put them out of their misery. All you Norwich fans would surely love to see your club win games on a regular basis wouldn't you? That's why the Norwich board have to take their dizzy heads out of the clouds and plan for a return to division one. It's the sensible thing to do, after all you always feel much more comfortable where you belong. This is a sincere message, one has to know ones place, and it's clearly not the Premiership.

However, if you put this in the context of Mr McNally's five year plan (newly relegated to Lg 1 when it was drawn up four years ago), we're well ahead of that, so probably consolidating, rather then sack a cautious manager. Odd that when times were good we heard regular sound bites from Mr McN, but none now. However, I still regard him as the architect of the present financially sound NCFC era, without whom we'd be, er, well, N, basically. But I still haven't enjoyed the footie much in the last two years.

First half was the first time I have seen us press and harry an opposition in months, passed quick and with intent, yet reverted back to type for last 30 minutes. The players look too scared of being caught out of their rigid defensive position far too often, meaning, strikers get isolated and Redmond has no one to pass too, and oppositions can pass it about with no pressure. Houghton also seems to have crushed the adventurous spirit out of Fer in under 5 months, just like Howson last season.

I have never had a bad word to say for him or Delia and her husband who have in the past bailed out the club in its darker days. No doubt Hughton was appointed in good faith and it seemed the right man at the time. However, I am now convinced it was a mistake. Hindsight is a wonderful thing: 2p a bucketful! But given the money he has spent and the results and quality of play to date, and especially this season, the facts speak for themselves. Hughton can only be judged on the playing record and that does not make good reading. We are failing badly and far too frequently against teams around or below us. The story is consistent and consistently poor.

No, I'm not in Ipswich, how quaint that you should think that all ITFC fans live in the town. Judging by your narrow minded ill informed repartee, that's hardly surprising. I appear to have rattled your little budgie cage, do I sense a certain amount of ' teddy in the corner' reaction? As you have mentioned another Town great ( Terry Butcher) any well informed football fan will be very quick to let you know just what a good player he was. But you are typical of the down trodden budgie fan who has suffered years of humiliation and under achievement. This has culminated in the bitter and churlish attitude that you portray. You demonstrate this by attempting to vilify Ipswich Town itself. This is a reaction that is so typical of someone who has no real ammunition to fire back. For your information and just for the record, I happen to think that Norwich is a fine city offering many cultural and historical qualities. I won't go into detail, for I fear that I would be wasting my time. Ipswich also has much to offer in those departments. You suggest that I get a life. He was clearly seen booing, was he booing the players or the supporters, these idiots should not be allowed to gain control of a football club. He has no idea of the concept of British football, the passion and identity of its supporters, or what the word respect actually means. Comes in, changes the club colours, acts like some sort of dictator, humiliates and sacks Malky Mackay. I would like to see all supporters from all clubs petition to get rid of this clown. I hope Cardiff City get relegated for their sake, Mr Tan sell the club to someone who actually gives a damn, see them get their colours and identity back and rise again. This is symptomatic of Hughton';s problems. he doesn't appear able to play players in their most effective positions and his substitutions often defy common sense. I also feel sure he is not a natural motivator. He must go as we desperately need to ring the changes, bring more drive, discipline and a more logical team set-up. My fear is that it may already be too late and his services should have been dispensed with a while back. As for the money spent, we all accept we can and never will be able to compete with the top teams and their wealth. But it is a question of what you do with your money rather than how much you spend for clubs like Norwich. We have spent a lot on front men but no true playmaker who can unlock the doors for them. • Agreed hurdy gurdy about the pressure on the next game. The table doesnt lie.We are 14th. There are ten teams in the fight for survival. Who else will want the pressure you are talking about. Who? An inexperienced manager. Or another who managed a team with less points than us. These seem to be what people are wanting. Am I happy about our situation. No, but whats the alternative. OTBC

  • I for one thought that we would be mullered by MU, but on the day the real MU did not turn up, just a bunch of reserves with a couple of returning long term injury players to make up 11, with Hooper, our only outlet bottled up, except for one snap shot, our chances of scoring looked grim, with Hoolie as our second line striker, who missed the best chance for us, looked good jinking into the box, but was never going to net, why then didn't we throw on Elmander and Beccio early, with Hooper,or the Wolf, because we were always going to loose this one anyway, and after all the points dropped, against a poor United, we may have nicked one... or luck two..., it takes a brave man to make brave decisions, to win the day... that's my gripe...OTBC

  • Andy's, you sound like a very confused and embittered little budgie. Interesting opinion on Ipswich coming from a person who thinks that he or she knows everyone who lives in that London lol. Let's have a think now, yes, pedigree, having a list of ancestors as proof of being a purebred animal. However if we are talking about getting your name in the history books, under ITFC you will find names like Sir Alf Ramsay ( The only Englishman to lift The World Cup) Sir Bobby Robson ( won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup whilst manager with ITFC). Notice these two fine ambassadors of this great sport being closely connected with our great club have been Knighted. Mick Mills, not only played for England but was one of England's finest Captains. Promoted to the Premiership in 2000 finishing 5th and qualifying for UEFA Cup. Yes we were relegated the following season, but surely even you will see the the importance of making history whilst we were there rather than being a boring little 'also ran' club like yours. Well the list goes on. Now let's see what have your sad bunch of no hopers done whilst in the Premiership? The only Premiership side to have been eliminated from the FA Cup by a Non League outfit on their own turf. The only side in the Premiership to have conceded as many as 7 goals this season, that's in one match by the way. And your future aspirations are? Well that will be to yet again attempt to stave off relegation. Your only hope of that being, is that there are 3 other clubs who incredible as it may seem, are just as inept as your win nothing, never won anything, completely outclassed anonymous little club. By the way, what is a trace horse, some sort of stencil set you had for Christmas perhaps.

  • I have been a Norwich fan for almost 50 years but have to admit that the Ipswich team of the 70's was a cracker. Sir Bobby brought in the two Dutchmen and a top class striker but most of the rest were "home-grown" players. I also had a lot of time for George Burley when he took his team up, didn't spend a fortune and proven then that a good championship team could do well in the Premier. We all know he spent badly in the next season and they came down again but that first season was brilliant.

  • Finn blue it still surprises me how think people from Ipswich are and how chippy they are given they come from an ugly little insignificant town in suffolk. Norwich are debt free and all the players contracts have clauses that allow for relegation. Also Norwich always maintain their support whatever league they are in unlike Ipswich. I live in London and everyone knows comparing Norwich to Ipswich in terms of pedigree is like comparing a trace horse to a donkey whether we are talking about football or soci-economic ,class in fact anything

  • Hi French Canary.hope this post will get through...Point taken..I have had my day of fun with you all and hope that all you ncfc posters on our site take note. I allways wish you to lose as it wouldn't be the same as you all do for us as well Its good to have banter as long as it dont become poison and degrading. So i wont be wishing you luck for the New Year as ia'm sure you wont be as well. One point i would like to pass on when we were in the dissy height's of the prem we over spent on over rated players and paid the price and are still doing so ...As you could find yourselfs in as players have to be paid well.and if you go down ..Hello been there.. It only after time that we reliese it. So now i wont bug you any more. But i wont be posting unless very necessary.. A true Town surpporter and good bye.

  • Yet another "must win" crunch game coming up. I am not at all confident we will come away from Selhurst Park with anything. Pulis will have us sussed and his team is now playing with belief and is already well organised. Does that sound like Norwich City? Not! If we don't win then it really must be the end for Hughton. Change always come with a risk attached. But if the board doesn't act the end game is inevitable. I am not convinced allowing Hughton to splash more cash is the answer. What has he achieved with the £28 million he spent in the summer? Zilch.

  • The only thing missing at Norwich is consistent motivation levels. Today's performance was terrific in all but result. Fulham on the other hand was a highly depressing train crash. I wonder how much it would help Hughton's ability to convey the authority to motivate the players if some of the fan base stopped actively campaigning against him at every turn? Just a thought.

  • Week after week we play well.......well not quite well enough. These are just excuses for serial failure!!! Don't feed us rational excuses Mr Hughton....turn platitudes into winning results. My son and I have a ritual game. We guess the excuse before we play back Hughtons post match interview! It would be funny if it wasn't annoyingly tragic!!!

  • 'Sharky', I really struggle with your comments, all you do is have pop at the majority of posters who voice their concern over our manager's tactics and our general poor showings. You once said that you were once involved in the professional \ semi professional game so you must have a suggestion or two on how to better ourselves. Let's face it NC are in a bit of a pickle but all you do on your posts is pull to bits other people's ideas. How about some from you?

  • …..lobbo..... the problem with trying to write a positive idea for the well being of Norwich City is that there are a few, disguised under many names that say they know more than us and therefore our comments are out of order!..... We were pestered by SO, and her offshoots in the defence of the indefensible when we came to realise that Hughton and his crew were not up to the required standard....Example:-He has spent millions of pounds bringing in players that don't match the standard of those that were already here, and is unable to weld them into a decent team, because that takes time.... Hoolahan who cost the club little in comparison, and has been sidelined on the managers whim, was the star performer again yesterday....On the other hand, his favourite boy Snodgrass can do no wrong..... but of course he was a Hughton purchase....I'm afraid Hughton has to go and we should try to get Gareth Malone in to bring a bit of Harmony to the place!.....
