Grant Holt is a strong enough character to handle his late spot kick miss against the Saints.
Norwich boss Chris Hughton is convinced the Canaries’ experienced captain will suffer no adverse reaction to spurning a stoppage time chance after Artur Boruc clawed out his drilled penalty.
“I wouldn’t think so. I think he’ll be disappointed because he wants to score goals and it’s one less opportunity,” said Hughton. “But he has been around too long and taken too many penalties, and missed some in the past, to let it affect him. Once you are there, you’ve got a goalkeeper who has to try to save it. If the goalkeeper guesses the right way then he has got a chance. He guessed the right way and it probably wasn’t one that was right in the corner. If it is right in the corner, it is more difficult but once he guessed the right way, it gives him an opportunity to save it.”
Saints’ players and management reacted furiously after the late penalty award when Holt tumbled under Luke Shaw’s attentions.
Hughton was adamant Norwich’s first spot kick in 12 months was long overdue and should have arrived in the opening period when the same two players tangled on the edge of the six-yard box.
“We certainly should have had one in that first half when Shaw pulls back Grant. Considering it was our first penalty of the season, we certainly deserved it,” he said. “What Grant has done really well is he has got himself ball-side of the defender. Do I think there was contact? Yes, I do.
“Whether there was enough contact for the referee to give a penalty of course he has to make that decision and he has an assistant on that side to help him make it. I go back and say it was our first penalty of the season and if we think that was soft, certainly the first one wasn’t.”
City would have moved into the top 10 if Holt had converted in the final meaningful act of the game at Carrow Road, but Hughton admitted the Canaries also owed a debt to keeper Mark Bunn to preserve a fourth league clean sheet of 2013.
“That is the frustration because it would have taken us into 10th place,” he said. “The conditions were not easy for Mark. He has been a very good signing. If you speak to him and the back four and the central two players in midfield they are probably more delighted with the clean sheet. The lads up front and wide players will be disappointed we haven’t gone on and won the game.”

VictorM, as you haven't clarified your numbers, you're criticising Holt for not scoring as many goals as Bale and Ba or the top end or Rooney and Walcott at the bottom end, Why not go all the way and whine that he's not making a contribution because he hasn't scored as many as Messi or Ronaldo? Get real man.

So what is it, 15, 12, or 10?

Well the accepted return for a striker in this country is 20 goals a season. As we are only three quarters of our way through I suppose 15 goals at this stage would be more than acceptable. I would have thought anybody would accept ten or twelve goals at this stage from their leading goalscorer.

VictorM, I see that either the site or my typing was not up to standard. When I asked how many oals Holt needed to score to keep you happy, it should have read goals. When I asked if our surname is Meldrew, it shuld have said is your surname Meldrew?

What's wrong Vicor, scared to quantify your criticism? I asked you how many oals he had to score to be ok in your eyes, you have pointedly failed to answer. Strikes me that you are simply someone who likes a good moan, as in your comments about the unfair treatment of Chris Martin. Never let reality get in the way of a good whinge, eh? Is our surname Meldrew?

Victor, Holt has for the majority of the season played as the lone striker with very little support. I take my hat off to him that he has managed to score 5. In your opinion how many goals should he have scored to avoid your disapproval? Mind you seeing your complaints on another page that the club haven't given Chris Martin a fair chance I'm not too sure that we'll agree.

As a professional footballer and a striker he is paid an enormous amount of money each week to do two things - keep himself fit and score goals. Despite the fact the loyal City fans treat him as a hero , at the moment he is failing on both counts.

Good stats, Doc. And relevant. I wonder how many Holty would score in the MUFC line-up and RvP with the NCFC system? Grant Holt, despite being POY three seasons running, is still vilified by some. He`s a good ol` boy! But, unlike God, he is not perfect.

Hmmm, Mirallas 5 goals, Kevin Nolan 6, Andy Caroll 3, Adebayor 3, Crouch 6, Kenwynne Jones 5, Ameobi 4. It seems that Holtie isn't the only disgrace in the Premier League!

Difficult for Holt to be in the box scoring when he has to go out wide to cross the ball to himself. On a wet day like Saturday shots and corsses shoudl have been pinging in dropping just short of the keeper. There was one on Saturday where Holt of old would have chipped the keeper but tried to play someone else in instead. Perhaps a condition of being on this site shoudl be watching "TheFootball League" every SatrurdaySunday. 5 more points eh? Certain politicians seem keen to give at least 3 points away

I still think there`s more to come from Holty. He`s only had one real "lean spell" in his career before now. That was when he was a "right winger" for Forest in the Bewilderwood Years.

Sure Victor, would like to see you training 6 days a week and run out every weekend for 90+ minutes like the 11 players on the pitch do. But I guess it's far easier to bash a player than it's to praise them?!?!? And why is it embaressing that he's only scored 5 goals? We haven't been playing the same formation as last year and we haven't had as many chances to score this season, with much more emphasis being placed on building from defence, so logically the goal tally will be reduced!

He may be able to get over missing the penalty but he should hold his head in embarrassment at only being able to score five goals this season. For a player who thinks he is premiership class, is receiving premiership money his goal tally so far is a disgrace.

Turner was the epitome of "cool". There`s no doubt all Hoots` defensive\defensive midfield signings have proved quality. Whittaker`s injury record is bit of a worry. Our forward play has gone backwards. 5 more points? Soon, please!

I think that we should invest in a set of stabilisers for Holt, especially when he is in the oppositions box, poor lad just can't seem to stand up.

exactement goldie, well said. Is it the inability of the strikers to get their shots away or the lack of service?

Number of shots on goal in recent matches says it all really. If you don't shoot you don't score. Not rocket science.
