Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has confirmed they have made bids for Celtic striker Gary Hooper and Swansea’s Danny Graham - but that their success is in the hands of the “powers that be”.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Speaking after the Canaries’ 5-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool, Hughton was asked if he would continue his pursuit of Hooper after Celtic manager Neil Lennon said the offer had been rejected.

“Most are aware that we have put in a couple of offers for players,” said Hughton. “That will be down to the powers that be to see whether that has any more mileage in it.

“As a squad, numbers wise, we’re OK but certainly if there’s the opportunity to add quality to what we have, then we will look for that opportunity and have worked very hard to do that.”

Asked if he would push his board to get the men he wanted, he said: “Ultimately those players are not ours, they belong to other clubs and they will have the say on whether that goes any further.

“But we’re trying and we’re pushing and they will have the bigger say in that.”

Asked if Graham was his other target, he confirmed: “Yes, he is.”

Defender Sebastien Bassong missed the defeat at Anfield as Liverpool completed an emphatic double after their 5-2 win at Carrow Road in September.

“He had a calf problem and it was the right decision not play him. He came up here and he was touch and go but the decision was not to play him,” said Hughton.

Of the result, he added: “Today is the only game for quite some time where we have been well beaten. We need to address that.

“Sometimes what will happen is that this type of defeat, this type of performance gets a reaction from the players and we’ll certainly need to do that.”

  • If memory serves me well (and I'm not that confident at my ole age) we were near the top of the EPL at Xmas in the early 90's, sold all our strikers (Ekoku, Robins+?) and got relegated. At least this time, we are trying to BUY them. But then again Dean Ashton didnt save us last time. So, why oh why do I feel so edgy? Well, 20 points from our undefeated run but just 6 from the other 13 or so games. So which way will our season go next? I sincerely trust we will try to go out and attack more. At least if we do go down, lets go down fighting. PLEASE!

  • Sorry Tom P, i agree and disagree with you,City are not as big a club as Celtic in terms of match attendance and scottish cup wins etc,but If City can stay in the Prem they are without doubt in a far better quality league than Celtic and im not being rude but if roles were reversed im sure Celtic would struggle in the Prem and City would be winning everything in the SPL,You only have to look at the teams in each league to see the gap in quality. • You can't be serious. Gary Hooper will be taking a step down if he moves to a team who are possibly facing relegation back to the league which we bought him from. No disrespect to Norwich as i have a soft spot for the side but Celtic are a bigger prospect, Norwich are simply more wages. At Celtic Gary has the chance to - Play in europe Win trophies Become a legend of one of the world's biggest clubs At Norwich he has the chance to - Earn some more cash. Those are the facts people, sorry.

  • Takes me back Zebdee. In the early seventies when Norwich were first in the old first division, they reached sixth in the table by Christmas only to crash and burn and finish one place above relegation. They werre relegated the following season. As you say under Deehan they went one better and crashed from sixth to relegation in the second half of the season, not helped to an injury to a goalkeeper and a poor reserve keeper.

  • I agree with Canarygirl - both! Greedy, or what? One of Holty\Graham to partner the smaller, quicker Hooper. Celtic may guarantee Hooper a good few medals but not a real footballing challenge, as many of the games he plays are against teams of Championship\L1 quality. Danny may, hopefully, find the Geordie(Tackem)-\Sunderland(Mackem) thing a disincentive. Glad Hoots has been wheeled out from his Sunday lunch with Delia & McGnarly to appease we Keyboard Warriors. • I would love to see both players at the club; I think they look quality and would certainly add to our very weak forward line. Sunderland might have the edge on Graham, but we can still sell a very successful and ambitious club to both. But what Hoots needs to do most is sell his managerial qualities. Neither of these two players would work in his current tactical strategy as it stands. But lets hope both Hooper and Graham are willing to talk and can see the bigger picture. We are still a very attractive proposition as a club. Upwards and onwards. otbc

  • To quote Mr. J.P.McEnroe you're the one who "Cannot be serious" Tom. There's nothing "Premier" about the Scottish Premier. Celtic are the only big team there + judging by the 2 games we played against you, you ain't that good. We wouldn't keep Hooper forever @ Norwich City but he can put himself in the shop window + attract bids from the Spurs etc of the real Premiership in a year or two's time. There's no competition up there. That's why your national side struggles.

  • Try again.waclor, your comment "injury to a `keeper & poor reserve keeper" gave me that sensation you got when teacher scraped his\her fingernails down the blackboard, attempting to eke out that last expensive shard of school chalk.... shudder. Zebbee, we got 22 points from those unbeaten 10 games (6W, 4D) so only 4 points from the other 13 + a burdensome goal deficit (-21)! If we survive, we`ll look back at that good run as a major miracle. We now need a minor one - another 12 points from 15 games (min)? :-(

  • Norwich desperately need 2 new Strikers whether it be Hooper, Graham or someone else. Jackson & Morrison are just not good enough for the Premership, & you can't expect Holt to do it all on his own. If a signing isn't made very soon, Norwich could be facing Championship football next season. You need to score goals to win games, & the clubs below are now picking up wins by doing this. I just hope things haven't been left too late, as all season we have had this problem.

  • Before the season started we needed to shore up the defence, and in all fairness, without the injuries to those key players, we have done that with some good buys. Maybe we just didn't have the money then to add further to the squad. We'll never have a squad of 25 Premiership standard players, the club's just not big enough. What we can hope for is a good 15 at most, any more is a bonus. It's how the squad is used tactically that worries me. CH seems very rigid in his concept of play and lack of tactical changes. At 2 - 0 down away, you have nothing to lose by trying something different as it's quite obvious that the current tactic is failing drastically.

I think Brad Friedel would be a useful acquisition, bags of experience and still a quality keeper. TBH I cannot see us getting either Graham or Hooper, hopefully I'm wrong.
