Wes Hoolahan admits only Norwich City can decide his future as he aims to shine on the Republic of Ireland’s summer friendly tour.
The Dubliner’s display in the Republic’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey at the weekend drew rave reviews from national boss Martin O’Neill but Hoolahan was a peripheral figure in the Canaries’ Premier League relegation.
Hoolahan featured for just 68 minutes under new boss Neil Adams over the run-in after falling out of favour with previous manager Chris Hughton following a failed bid to leave in the January transfer window.
The 32-year-old has already been touted with a summer exit to newly-promoted Leicester City and Hoolahan was non committal when pressed on his plans beyond this weekend’s latest test for the Irish against Italy at Craven Cottage and two friendly dates in America.
“I don’t know yet. I have a year left on my contract,” said Hoolahan. “At the moment I am (staying). It’s just great to get on the pitch and show what I can do. I didn’t play a lot this season. I’m buzzing to get out there and play more games.
“You come here to win the games, not to have a laugh or anything like that. They got the goal and it took us about ten of 15 minutes to get back into it. From then on we created a lot of chances. We’re playing good. We’re passing the ball well and creating a lot of chances. If you’re not playing well then you have something to worry about and there were positives I think.”
O’Neill is in no doubt how important Hoolahan is to his preparations for the Euro2016 qualifying campaign, with fit-again club mate Anthony Pilkington an unused substitute against the Turks but poised to play a part on the America leg of the tour against Portugal and Costa Rica.
“I thought little Hoolahan played brilliantly for us. He tried to create things for us,” said O’Neill. “Sometimes some big boots come in and shove him off the ball a little bit, but overall he showed a great determination and great ability.”
