Norwich City club captain Russell Martin insists the squad is squarely behind Chris Hughton.
The Scottish international knows Hughton’s own position at Carrow Road has been a routine topic during a frustrating season but Martin believes that comes with the territory in modern football.
“The responsibility doesn’t just lie solely with the manager. He prepares us extremely well as players, he gives us a lot of trust and respect and it is up to us go out there and put in performances,” he said. “He lets us share our opinions when it is going well and not so well and we enjoy coming into training.
“That is very important. People talk about pressure on managers but it is not just Norwich, it is every club in the Football League when you have a couple of poor results. It is a hard job, you are under scrutiny all the time but he manages to keep calm and if he is under pressure then he doesn’t show it.
“As players we tend to cut ourselves off from all of it. If you focus on that it can drive you crazy but we know by performing we can make it easier on the gaffer and ease the pressure he is put under.”
Norwich head to Aston Villa this weekend looking to build on a stirring Premier League win over Tottenham and Martin accepts Hughton and his players will be back in the firing line if they fail to perform.
“Beating Spurs probably doesn’t stop the pressure and speculation if we don’t go and get a result at Aston Villa,” he said. “I’m sure it all will be spoken about again but I think what it shows, and what we have done in a few big games this season, is that when the pressure was really on that has brought the best out of us. We spoke about it in the dressing room after the (Tottenham) game and there is nothing better than going back into a winning dressing room. We went out there and put in a performance against Tottenham and if we keep doing that then we’ll be okay.”
