RUMOUR MILL: Norwich City defender Dani Ayala wanted by Middlesbrough on a permanent deal

Norwich City’s on-loan defender Dani Ayala is poised to extend his short term stay with Championship club Middlesbrough ahead of a possible permanent move to Teeside.
Ayala’s current loan deal runs out on Thursday but talks are at an advanced stage between the two clubs to extend Ayala’s spell at the Riverside with Boro officials reportedly keen on a potential transfer deal for the Spanish centre-back.
The 23-year-old was again instrumental in the Teesiders’ 1-0 Championship win over struggling Charlton at the weekend and reports in the north-east on Monday claim Boro chief executive Neil Bausor has discussed a range of options with City which include a loan until the end of the season and a permanent transfer.
“We’re near to a deal to keep him,” said Boro boss Aitor Karanka. “The club is working to keep him here, and he is an important player for me. The most important thing is that the club are doing everything they can. Would it be another loan or a permanent signing? We are working on lots of options.”
Karanka admitted earlier this month Ayala is a player who could have a big part in Boro’s revival.
“We are working to keep Dani here because he has made great strides,” said Karanka. “But he needs to keep working. If he thinks he’s a better player than he is then he will make the mistakes he has made in the past.”
The 23-year-old has yet to make a first team appearance at Norwich under manager Chris Hughton since moving to the club from Liverpool in August 2011. Ayala spent the majority of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and has so far made 13 appearances for the Teesiders.
