Will Norwich City be involved in the drama of transfer window deadline day? David Freezer assesses where the Canaries need to strengthen before 11pm tonight.
Much has changed at Norwich City in a year, or has it?
One year ago today I was sent out on a covert late night mission with our chief photographer Steve Adams, to Norwich Airport.
A certain Gary Hooper was the name on the lips of all City fans, as speculation grew to fever pitch that the Celtic striker was going to sign for the Canaries before the January transfer window deadline.
The rumour online was that a plane was on standby at Glasgow Airport, to fly Hooper to Norfolk if the details could be straightened out. That deal was not done in the dramatic late style of some transfers though and Hooper never arrived – a small private jet did land at Norwich Airport shortly after 11pm however, with only its pilot disembarking.
A year on and, of course, not only an estimated £5.5m deal for Hooper but the £8m marque signing of Ricky van Wolfswinkel have been completed.
The floodgates have not been flung open with the steady flow of goals Norwich boss Chris Hughton had been banking on though, so will there be more deadline day drama tonight?
City have scored just 18 goals in 23 Premier League games, with only Cardiff (17) and Crystal Palace (15) having scored less.
Hooper has scored five and looked capable of scoring plenty more but van Wolfswinkel has scored just once, Johan Elmander has only scored twice – against League Two side Bury in the Capital One Cup – and Luciano Becchio has barely had a chance to score his first of the season, making just six substitute appearances.
So do City need to get in another striker to boost their chances of keeping clear of the relegation scrap?
Personally I would rather see another creative midfielder added to give the strikers a better supply, but I won’t be holding my breath.
Neither will I be going anywhere near Norwich Airport again tonight!
