Leroy Fer will be Norwich City’s sole representative at the World Cup in Brazil after being confirmed in Holland’s 23-man squad.
The midfielder has made the cut under Manchester United’s incoming boss Louis van Gaal for the Dutch, who reached the last World Cup final in South Africa four years ago. Fer is in a squad that also includes the likes of Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie and the 24-year-old is one of six players from the Premier League. Fer made 29 top flight appearances for the Canaries, scoring three goals, in his first season in England following a move from FC Twente.
Holland have been drawn in a testing qualifying group with holders Spain, Chile and Australia. The Dutch begin their campaign with a re-match against the Spanish on June 13 in Salvador before playing Australia in Port Alegre on June 18 and finishing their poool section against Chile in Sao Paulo on June 23.
Fer’s club team mate John Ruddy is on stand-by for England but will only travel if any of first choice trio Joe Hart, Fraser Forster or Ben Foster are ruled out.
Meanwhile, City youngster Jamar Loza has linked up with the Jamaica squad for two UK-based friendlies later this week. The ‘Reggae Boyz’ play Egypt at Leyton Orient on Wednesday fresh from a 1-0 defeat to World Cup-bound Switerzland. Loza is one of three new faces in the squad.
The 19-year-old was born in Kingston before moving to England when he was six. Loza made his Premier League debut for Norwich in the final day 2-0 defeat to Arsenal which confirmed the club’s relegation.
The striker has been a prolific scorer at youth and academy level for the Canaries and will be one of the young breed aiming to impress Neil Adams in the Championship.
