Norwich City will travel to Shrewsbury Town in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The Canaries beat Crawley Town 3-1 in the second round at Carrow Road on Tuesday night thanks to a debut goal from striker Cameron Jerome and a brace from teenage winger Josh Murphy.

That victory has earned City a trip to Shrewsbury to take on the League Two side – who beat Premier League new boys Leicester City 1-0 in the second round on Tuesday.

It will be the first meeting between the two sides for over 28 years – and City’s first visit to Shrewsbury’s Greenhous Meadow ground.

The Shrews were still based at Gay Meadow back in February 1986 when they hosted the Canaries in the old Division Two, with the visitors coming out on top 3-0 courtesy of goals from Kevin Drinkell (2) and Mark Barham. Ken Brown’s team went on to win the title by a seven-point margin.

All third round ties are scheduled to be played during the week commencing September 22.

  • So, cutty, you constructed the whole `hummus` thing from the tenuous relationship `twixt its alternative spelling, `houmous` (the English way!), and `Greenhous`, the sponsorship name of The Shrews` ground, `New Meadow`. I am of an accord with Mrs. cutty ref your weird mind. I sense a kindred spirit... Top marks, Swiss, for spotting the gynaecological gag. Many a true word hath been spoken in gestation...

  • One of my remaining 25 to do, although I went to Gay Meadow. Shame this isn't FA Cup 3rd round Saturday, as I'd be there in a shot. No time left to book off work unfortunately.

  • I`ve ascertained that you`re an erudite chap, DJ_F, I was just manoeuvering for the chance to use that feeble `Salopian Tube` gag! Shrewsbury is not far from E. Benno`s patch, Telford. A11\A14\M6\M54\A5. About 250 miles? From Naaridge. Not Satnav - I worked for the precursor of Cask Marque, and Shropshire was one of my territories. Along with Hackney, Oxford and The Forest of Dean.

  • MB, I knew it was in Shropshire but may not be able to find Shropshire without a map. Never ventured there before.... Probably too big a schlep for a midweek but shame.

  • I still don`t get the houmous connection, cutty!! Please tell me. I`ve even been on google and can find nothing about hummus\houmous that relates to a meadow!! Gay or otherwise. I used to make that stuff by the bucketload. I just luurv it. ;-) Is it just the `hous` thing?? Top tenuous in my search...

  • Thanks, cutty. Found it. I`m relieved you`re not going ga-ga. That`d be my "Mad" territory under threat. Blimey, old Igno was Mattiesque in the verbosity stakes, and a combination of Stuart Hall, Oscar Wilde & Divot on the flowery language. Who is this binner, Trevor, he wishes to inflict on we pure-blooded Naaaridge boys?? We can`t be doing with that. Also cheapskating by not flying Dubya in from Yabba Dabba Abu Dhabi. I think Igno is trying to get himself sacked & claim the beer ration as compo. Now we`ve smoked him out, let`s call his bluff! OTBSLOBS. IIRWT!!

  • CUTTY; has Igno been retro-ethered? Or are you cracking up & are talking to a Phantom Igno?? And why do Shrewsbury elect to play on a surface made of chickpea & sesame paste???

  • cutty; where is this Igno offering to be found?? I`ve seen nothing new from the absentee SLOBS Manager designate... DJ_F; Shrewsbury`s in Shropshire (as you well know!!). It`s quite near Wales, really. I suppose Wales is a suburb of Shrewsbury, really. There is a decent local brewery somewhere near, so you can enjoy a few Salopian Tubes. (That one would be more apt for canarydownunder, Adelaide Canary et al) ;-) Timbo - it looks like your proof reading fee is on the way...

  • Isn't this EXACTLY the kind of draw that should be televised, not necessarily because of Norwich taking part, but a League 2 team, at home, taking on on ex-Prem side .......... the clue's in the competition, LEAGUE CUP. Get the smaller guys on TV and follow them through the rounds - stuff Man C, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U ;-) We can watch them every weekend

  • A cup run beckons IF the club wants it. Most likely however it will be a case of can our weakened team overcome their first eleven and go on to meet either a big gun whose own weakened team beat some minnows first eleven, or a minnows whose best team beat a big gun's weakened team. Er, let me read that back, yes, I think that's right.

  • Plenty of 'big clubs' drawn against each other. The 'Shrews' are going well in div 2 so this could be tricky, however, in the next round we should be one of the 'big clubs'.
