Norwich City have targeted Huddersfield's Stuart Webber in their search for a new sporting director.

The Terriers' head of football operations is the frontrunner for the newly created role, although Huddersfield insist they have not heard anything from the Canaries.

Norwich have considered Celtic's head of development scouting David Moss but Webber is the favourite of the board.

Webber, who was linked with the Rangers director of football role this month, has transformed Huddersfield's scouting operation and was instrumental in their appointment of boss David Wagner in 2015.

Wagner and Webber have overseen the club's rise from 18th to third in the Sky Bet Championship having exploited the foreign market and taken Chelsea's Isaiah Brown and Manchester City's Aaron Mooy on loan.

Webber was previously head of recruitment at Wolves and, before that, spent three years as director of recruitment at Liverpool, helping sign a 15-year-old Raheem Sterling.

Chairman Ed Balls wants a new sporting director in place to help in the search for a new head coach but doesn't expect both positions to be filled during the international break.

'What we don't want to be is in a position where these roles are not filled by June or July,' said Balls.

'It makes sense to bring in a sporting director who is then heavily involved in a head coach appointment.

'That is the way around we want do this.'

Should Webber be confirmed as the club's new sporting director he will work with Steve Stone, who was named managing director on Saturday.

It was an appointment which had already been agreed days before in a shake up of the structure at Carrow Road.

The board is happy for Alan Irvine to continue in temporary charge of the first team following City's 2-0 win over Barnsley at the weekend, which revitalised talk of a late dash for the Championship play-offs.

Norwich's win took them just five points outside the top six as their rivals faltered and, if Irvine can continue the Canaries' upturn, it could be difficult to look elsewhere from the former Preston and West Brom boss.
