Robert Snodgrass will strive to get the upper hand against one of his hardest Premier League opponents this weekend when he lines up against Southampton and England prodigy Luke Shaw.

Snodgrass believes the 18-year-old will go on to be one of England’s best full-backs, but the Norwich midfielder is unfazed by the personal battle in prospect at St Mary’s.

“He is a great talent. It will be a tough job for myself but I have played against him before and I will look forward to that challenge,” said Snodgrass. “He is one of the best I have faced, definitely. We were speaking about it after the England game the other day and he just looked as if he took to it like a duck to water. He didn’t look out of place. He was first class and he could develop into one of the best left-backs England have seen for many years.

“It is just the fact that he has the likes of Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole in front of him at the moment. It will be tough at this time to be a regular but if he keeps putting in those type of performances he will be fine.”

Snodgrass is confident Shaw’s time on the international stage will come, but this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil may be too early in his rapid development.

“That is a tough question but I don’t think I would take him because of the two in front of him,” said Snodgrass. “Maybe you could take him along to give him that experience, because he is still learning, but I would take Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines. Cole has the experience and the form Baines has been in for the last two or three years he deserves to go. Shaw looks like he has been playing for years. That is all credit to Southampton and their youth set-up. They have the young lad (Calum) Chambers on the other flank and what a player he is going to be as well.”
