Norwich City winger Yanic Wildschut has joined Bolton Wanderers on loan for the season.

The Dutchman was surplus to requirements under Canaries head coach Daniel Farke but had been in Germany with the first team during pre-season and has featured during recent friendly fixtures.

Wildschut was an unused substitute on Tuesday though, as City were beaten 2-1 by Union Berlin during their tour of Germany, and was not on the bench for this evening's game against Wolfsburg – adding fuel to the speculation around his future.

His omission followed an HITC Sport report that Ipswich and Wanderers had joined Championship rivals Wigan in the race for the powerful forward's signature on Wednesday.

The Canaries have now confirmed the deal, while revealing there is an option for Wildschut to return in January.

'It feels great to be here,' the 26-year-old told Bolton's website. 'I spoke to the manager this morning and he gave me a good feeling – he made me want to sign for Bolton Wanderers with what he said to me.

'I have been in England now for four years and I think I know how the league works. Hopefully I can help the club to have a very good season in 2018/19.'

The former Ajax trainee was a deadline day signing of former City manager Alex Neil's in January 2017 but has gone on to score just twice in 29 games.

That followed an impressive spell with Wigan, scoring seven goals to help earn promotion from the third tier in 2016, earning a £4million move which could potentially have risen to around £7m.

He scored once in 20 games under Farke last season – the winner in a 1-0 success at Sheffield United in September – before joining Cardiff City on loan.

Ten appearances followed for Neil Warnock's promotion chasing team but just three were starts in a largely unsuccessful spell, with the Bluebirds not interested in taking the former Middlesbrough man with them on their Premier League adventure.

The Wigan Post recently reported that Latics manager Paul Cook was keen to take Wildschut back to the DW Stadium. The wide man has a year remaining on his contract, although City retain the option of a further 12 months.

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson added: 'I am really pleased that Yanic has signed for Bolton Wanderers and he will be an excellent acquisition for us.

'He offers real pace and power and I am sure he will excite our fans.'
