Norwich City have reportedly enquired about taking teenage striker Ben Woodburn on loan from Liverpool.

Championship rivals Sheffield United are also keen, according to the Liverpool Echo, although the Reds are unlikely to sanction a loan until manager Jurgen Klopp has assessed his progress during pre-season.

The 18-year-old burst onto the scene in November 2016 when he scored in a 2-0 win over Leeds in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at Anfield, becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer at 17 years and 45 days, breaking Michael Owen’s record by 98 days.

Eight other senior appearances were made during the 2016/17 season for the academy product but Woodburn barely featured last season, despite emerging as a Wales international.

In September 2017 the Nottingham-born forward came off the bench to score a spectacular debut winner against Austria during World Cup qualifying, sparking wild celebrations at the Cardiff City Stadium, becoming the second youngest scorer for Wales behind Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

A further six caps followed but now a Championship loan could be in the offing for Woodburn, however Klopp wants to assess his progress and needs some of his younger players during pre-season while some of the club’s international stars recover from World Cup duty.

The striker is in a similar situation to winger Harry Wilson, who the Canaries are also reportedly keen to sign – along with most clubs in the Championship – after the 21-year-old scored seven goals in 14 games for Hull last season.

Both played in a 7-0 friendly win at Chester on Saturday, with Wilson scoring twice in the first half, and the Echo report that the Reds want assurances of regular football from prospective loan clubs.

City sporting director Stuart Webber worked as director of academy recruitment for Liverpool between 2009 and 2012.
