Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul is reportedly on the verge of joining Norwich City on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old, capped eight times by Holland, is a free agent after an unsuccessful spell with Brighton last season.

HITC Sport report that City are on the verge of bringing in the Dutchman, as head coach Daniel Farke looks to fill the gloves vacated by Manchester City loanee Angus Gunn, who was a Championship ever-present last season.

Krul was the established Premier League first choice at Newcastle between 2011 and 2015 and made 245 appearances for the Magpies during a decade with the north-east club.

Academy product Remi Matthews and Northern Ireland international Michael McGovern have been vying for the keeper’s jersey so far during pre-season but Farke has hinted he has not yet settled on a number one.

Now it seems Krul could claim the gloves, having only made five appearances for Brighton last season – all in cup competitions – and featured as an unused substitute in 33 of the Seagulls’ top-flight games.

After picking up a serious knee injury during 2015/16 Krul spent the following campaign on loan in Holland with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar as he searched for fitness.

He has not featured for his country since the European Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan in October 2015 in which he injured his anterior cruciate ligament, one of just two appearances since a famous World Cup display in Brazil in 2014.

Krul was brought on as a substitute by manager Louis Van Gall specifically for a penalty shootout against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals, replacing Jasper Cillessen and saving two penalties.
