Following Norwich City’s 2-2 draw at Birmingham on the opening weekend of the new Championship campaign, Canaries correspondent David Freezer has posted his ratings.

Tim Krul – 6

Unsighted ahead of a fine strike for the first Blues goal, after completing plenty of routine work in the first half, but could have done better for the second.

Ben Marshall – 7

Good pass to set Onel Hernandez into the right channel ahead of the first equaliser and generally a good option going forward, with reliable set-pieces, but sometimes left a bit too much space behind him defensively.

Grant Hanley – 6

Lack of pre-season action was clear for the new captain and looked tired as the game progressed. Fortunate to be bailed out of trouble by Timm Klose after a scuffed pass late in the first half but also a fine tackle back on Maghoma in the second half.

Timm Klose – 7

Looks in good shape after a full pre-season and was sharp into the tackle and in his passing. Bailed out Hanley with a necessary foul late in the first half but had also allowed Che Adams to escape and cross, only for Lukas Jutkiewicz to waste the chance.

James Husband – 5

Looks anxious in possession and lacking in confidence before being replaced by Leitner in the 63rd minute, not grabbing the chance to impress in the absence of Jamal Lewis.

Alex Tettey – 7

Somehow dragged himself through 90 minutes despite missing much of pre-season due to chickenpox. Unspectacular but kept putting out the usual fires and also helped keep some attacks going.

Tom Trybull – 5

Wasn’t able to dictate the tempo as much as he would have liked as City tried to find some rhythm amid the heat of the first half and also didn’t offer too much in the way of defensive cover, replaced by Kenny McLean in the 63rd minute.

Marco Stiepermann – 5

Plenty of effort but little in the way of quality from a surprise start on the right wing. Switched to left-back before jarring his knee and being replaced by Dennis Srbeny with 15 minutes remaining.

Teemu Pukki – 6

Plenty of effort and work from one of City’s debutants but pace and touch didn’t quite look at the levels he’d hope yet. Hopefully more to come from the Finland international.

Onel Hernandez – 8

Clinical finishing for both of his goals to be the hero in front of the 2,300 away fans, earning a booking for taking off his shirt, but plenty of positive running before his goals as well.

Jordan Rhodes – 6

Denied by a fine Connal Trueman save early on, after a fine header from a Marshall cross from the right and generally offered a focal point but had to score from Leitner’s superb cross before the late drama kicked off.

SUBSTITUTES

Moritz Leitner (for Husband, 65) - 7

Man with a point to prove, injecting positive passing and looking too much for the Blues to handle, so unfortunate to see Rhodes not finish his sublime cross.

Kenny McLean (for Trybull, 63) – 7

Immediately added urgency and drive to City’s attacks and popped up all over the pitch to take possession and look for openings, before having to cover at left-back.

Dennis Srbeny (for Stiepermann, 75) – 7

Got stuck into the challenge and showed great strength and awareness to tee up Hernandez for the crucial equalising goal.
