Just a handful of games into his Canaries career, Tom Trybull’s influence and rave reviews grow by the match – and MICHAEL BAILEY is impressed too.

It remains hard not to compare the ‘project’ at Norwich City to what took place at Huddersfield Town – the latest nugget being Elias Kachunga.

The German-born forward showed real pedigree as he rose through the ranks at Borussia Monchengladbach. There was even a pre-Premier League season hat-trick for Hertha Berlin at Carrow Road back in 2012.

By the time the then 24-year-old was loaned and subsequently bought for £1.1m, there was no doubt. The Terriers had a class act who played a major role in taking the Championship by storm – and with more than enough promise to make a further step up.

Sure, it helped that he continued to score each time he came up against Norwich – but there were plenty of other goals on the way to the Premier League, where Kachunga has now made five appearances and conjured one assist.

It all stuck in the back of my mind because here at Carrow Road with their first summer overhaul complete, I found myself wondering – did City find a Kachunga?

But I’m not wondering any more. He’s here, and he’s Tom Trybull.

He plays a different role to Kachunga of course, but he exudes a similar level of quality and technique. Trybull’s tackle, turn and sublime through-ball for Josh Murphy’s goal at Brentford was a footballing work of art.

There has been zero settling period on the pitch. No adjustment. Both Trybull and City head coach Daniel Farke made sure he was fit, and that was it. From there, his quality on the ball has shone – arguably as expected. He’s chalked up one lovely goal and now a sumptuous assist.

But it’s the other side of the game that’s really impressed.

City’s rapidly developing reputation for playing the game as winners rather than participants was led by Trybull’s second half of spoiling at Bramall Lane. His desire was infectious.

And having spoken to Tom about what led him to Norfolk, you sense that desire is fired by his drive to make some luck for himself – when maybe in the past, his own haste got in the way.

The 24-year-old German defensive midfielder has slipped into English football so seamlessly, you find yourself wondering how City managed to get their hands on him. And as is the nature of the beast, some City fans are already grimacing over how hard they may find it to now keep him.

Trybull’s one-year City deal, I believe, also comes with an option in the club’s favour for a second – while his own recent, transient past has him desperate to be a sustained success at his club.

Fortunately for Norwich, his club is this club – and it already looks like Tom Trybull has all the tools he needs to take them wherever he wants.
