In-form Norwich City starlet James Maddison has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the first time, with Canaries goalkeeper Angus Gunn also retaining his place.

The feeling when you get called up to represent your Country @england ❤️ Special moment for me and my family.

Maddison, 20, has been City’s best performer in recent weeks and has scored three goals in his last seven games.

Alongside Manchester City loanee Gunn he has been named in Aidy Boothroyd’s latest squad, for a 2019 European U21 Championship qualifier against Ukraine.

Maddison was called up at U20 level last year but wasn’t capped. After making his breakthrough as a Championship player for Daniel Farke’s team this season the playmaker has now earned U21 recognition.

The Coventry City academy product – signed by Norwich in a deal worth up to £3.5m in January 2016 – has scored four goals in 16 games, two of which were nominated for the Championship’s goal of the month award for September, with his long-range strike in a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough claiming the prize.

He was also nominated for the division’s player of the month award and was voted City’s player of the month by supporters for September.

Gunn has nine caps for the Young Lions so far, becoming first choice keeper after shadowing Jordan Pickford during this summer’s European U21 Championship in Poland, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Germany in the semi-finals.

The 21-year-old has played in three of England’s four qualifiers so far, including wins over Scotland and Andorra during the October international break which have put England top of their qualifying group for the finals in Italy and San Marino.

The Norfolk-born goalkeeper has played every minute of City’s 15 games in the Championship so far this season, keeping seven clean sheets – which ties him with Aston Villa’s Sam Johnstone for the most in the division so far.

The son of Canaries legend Bryan Gunn also set a new club record when keeping five consecutive league clean sheets earlier in the campaign.

England face Ukraine U21s in Kiev on Friday, November 10 (4pm UK time).
