Chris Hughton looks set to add more pieces to his jigsaw as the opening day of the Premier League campaign draws ever closer.
The City boss has made four additions to his squad since arriving at Carrow Road in the summer, but admits that he is still in the market to make further improvements.
And it would appear that a new left-back could be on his shopping list. Reports have linked him with two candidates – Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre and now Lazio’s Javier Garrido.
The claims suggest Izaguirre would be a permanent deal, while Hughton would be looking to secure a loan move for Garrido.
However, the figure quoted for the Celtic man is £5m, and while transfer fees are almost exclusively withheld from the public domain, it is unlikely City have laid out that sort of money in years. The speculation that the deal could be a player-plus-cash offer would appear more likely.
According to Sky Sport Italia – and other Italian media – Spanish left-back Garrido would move to England on a season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.
Garrido, 27, has Premier League experience with Manchester City between 2007 to 2010 before joining Lazio where he made 21 Serie A appearances.
Either way, both have pedigree: Izaguirre – a Honduran international – has impressed at Celtic since joining them in 2010 from Motagua in the Honduran League and a year ago was linked with a move to Manchester United.
The left-back spot at Carrow Road is one in which Hughton’s resources are thin; with Adam Drury having joined Leeds, Marc Tierney is the only specialist, although summer recruit Steven Whitaker – currently out injured – can do a job there. There are suggestions that striker James Vaughan, who missed most of last season through injury, would form part of a deal – although one British newspaper yesterday claimed the former Everton man is wanted by Hughton’s former club Birmingham City.
One national newspaper claimed Norwich have told Birmingham to double their £500,000 offer for Vaughan who reportedly cost more than £2m a year ago.
