Emi Buendia's arrival from Getafe via a productive loan spell at Cultural Leonesa in the Spanish Second Division was the latest twist in a familiar transfer strategy under Stuart Webber and Daniel Farke.

The financial realities at Carrow Road, since dropping out of the Premier League, continue to impinge on any attempt to overhaul the squad Farke and Webber inherited last summer.

Tapping into overseas markets offers value and the chance to unearth a hidden gem or two. Let's be honest, which Norwich fan had heard of Christoph Zimmermann or Tom Trybull before they appeared in Norfolk last summer?

Now both are key figures after being rewarded with fresh contracts for impressive debuts in England. City recruited Onel Hernandez from German second tier club Eintracht Braunschweig in January, and Dennis Srbeny from the level below after leading the scoring charts at Paderborn. Tyronne Ebuehi was the one who got away at the start of the year, but that speculative foray into Dutch football, allied to Todd Cantwell's loan move to Fortuna Sittard and now Savvas Mourgos' pending short-term move to Dordrecht, highlight Holland is another desirable market in the sights of City's scouting network.

Prior to Buendia's recent arrival, Norwich were heavily linked with Marvin Ducksch, who finished last season as top scorer in Bundesliga Two. Allowing for the homegrown rules that will apply once more right across the Football League in 2018/19, City's transfer focus is likely to remain overseas. With that in mind, Paddy picks out five who might fit the bill from across the second tiers in Europe.

• Andreas Voglsammer, striker (Arminia Bielefeld)

Actually scored against the Canaries in a 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat for the Germans on home soil last summer.

Just had the best goalscoring season of his career. Scored 13 goals in 34 appearances.

Powerful frontman who should not be fazed by the physicality of the Championship. Started his career at Bayern Munich and touted with FC Ingoldstadt, who reportedly failed with a 1.5m euro bid last January. Bielefeld may need plenty of persuasion to part with a front player under contract until 2021.

• Diego Johannesson, right-back (Real Oviedo)

Icelandic international with dual Spanish nationality. Ever-present last season as Oviedo missed out on the play-offs by goal difference.

Notched four goals to underline his attacking qualities, while eight bookings perhaps illustrate his combative streak. Converted from a right winger after joining Oviedo's youth set-up in 2011.

Made his international debut in January 2016 but not part of Iceland's World Cup plans in Russia. The 24-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his current deal and reportedly available for 600,000 euro.

Former Dutch Under-21 international who joined from Ajax in 2016, where he spent four years without making the breakthrough.

Scored 16 goals in 34 appearances last season in the Dutch second tier for a side who finished 17th.

Out of contract in 2019, and subject of reported transfer interest from Italy. The Eagles may have to cash in this summer or risk seeing the 22-year-old leave for a compensation package. Pacy frontman who plays on the last shoulder, and loves to run in behind.

• Park Yi-young, right-back (St Pauli)

Recovered from an injury-hit start to last season to become a first choice for the final 13 games.

The 23-year-old scored a crucial goal in a 1-0 win over Bielefeld that averted any lingering relegation fears.

Plucked from the regional leagues in 2015 after arriving from South Korea. Talks are underway to extend his St Pauli contract, which has 12 months to run. Reported market value of 350,000 euro.

• Lukas Hinteseer, striker (VfL Bochum)

City have already done business with Bochum when they recruited Marco Stiepermann.

Austria-bred forward Hinteseer scored 14 goals and created two assists in Bundesliga Two last season to finish joint second top scorer behind Ducksch. Had two seasons in the Bundesliga with FC Ingoldstadt. Out of contract in 2019.

Was drafted back into the Austrian international squad for recent friendlies. Powerful aerial presence.
