Norwich City boss Neil Adams is urging Ricky van Wolfswinkel to keep believing he can help the Canaries complete a Premier League great escape after a 1-0 loss at Fulham dragged them deeper into relegation trouble.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The club record signing was denied a first goal since his debut day header against Everton by David Stockdale’s stunning reaction stop at Craven Cottage. Stockdale also clawed out Leroy Fer’s close range header before Robert Snodgrass struck the woodwork in a vibrant opening, until Hugo Rodallega pounced to inflict a seventh straight away league defeat on the Canaries.

Norwich remain two points clear of the third-from-bottom Cottagers ahead of a tough run-in against three of the top five plus a trip to Manchester United.

New boss Adams is convinced van Wolfswinkel can deliver after suffering a defeat in his first match since replacing Chris Hughton.

“Ricky needs a goal. He scored in the first game of the season, he came with a hefty price tag and he works his socks off. He gives you everything you want from a centre forward but they are paid to get goals and he knows that,” said Adams. “It has been very tough for him but he keeps believing and he is still getting in the right positions.

“He did everything right on that chance. He got good contact, he was in the right spot and the keeper has just made a great save. That is your luck when you have not scored all season. Nine times out of ten that goes in. I couldn’t believe the save when I saw it on the replay and it is good keeping. Ricky is the unlucky one.”

Adams felt City would have ended their winless run at Craven Cottage dating back to 1986 if the visitors had made the breakthrough in a positive first-half spell.

“If we had got the goal we wanted I think we would have been talking about a different story and no-one would have denied us that,” he said. “If Stockdale does not pull off an unbelievable save we go 1-0 up and we are confident we can get a second and maybe win it comfortably. They go and nick one before half-time and then look to make it difficult for you.”

  • I have a friend out here in Portugal, who warned me a year ago that Norwich would regret buying van Wolfswinkel. He said that norwich had been conned into believing that in signing van Wolfswinkel, we would be signing another van Persie. We weren't. He said that Sporting had done good business by unloading a striker who was nowhere near UK Premier League class. It would appear that maybe his words were somewhat prophetic!

  • RVW was unlucky with that chance on saturday, but the cut back to nobody when he was through their defence with players waiting on the edge of the box was laughable and horrendous... his confidence and touch both seem shot.... he was even getting mocking cheers from our fans every time he managed a simple pass at one stage of the game... poor Ricky...... My solution woudl be to play Fer up front with Sndograss just behind him in the hole.... Fer is the only player in the squad who is strong enough and has good enough touch to hold up the ball... Snodgrass is the only player in the squad who looks like he is going to score.... pack the midfield with Tettey, Johnson and Howson.... and look for Ollsen and Redmond to whip crosses in.... for the next 4 matches we will need to be resolute in defence or we will get ripped to shreds by Suarez, Hazard, Rooney etc.

  • Yes MB, I was probably barking mad at the time and missed a few. On a recount it's up to 16. By the way I occasionally view the ITFC boards linked to a local Ipswich publication where their fans respond to articles like what we do (copyright E.Wise). There is the odd bit of Canary trolling but, whatever the hue, I just don't get it. Take Finn's masterpiece, he submits a grammatically flawed post perversely telling a joke with a punch line that Norfolk people are thick and then, in full flow, he commits to the old "ruff" gag. Finn could do worse than find Swiss's brilliant analysis of trolling and then take an inward look. Anyway, troll analysis is an interesting diversion and my hunch is we will have the answers long before anyone has worked out how to get goals out of RVW (There, on topic in conclusion).

At first he seemed to be a contributor from our local `rivals` who was, nevertheless, quite sensible and civil. Sadly, he has reverted to type. Perhaps `regressed` is a better way of putting it. Maybe it`s the Donkeyboys` still extant hopes of a play-off place that is encouraging this new cheekiiness? Oops - I just read LincsCan`s coda - well predicted, LC! • Whatever happens I think it would be a big mistake to sell van Wolfsvinkel at the end of the season. Firstly: we would get a terrible price for him, look at what happened with Cornelius from Copenhagen and his transfer to Cardiff. They sold him back to his former club and made over a 50% loss. Secondly: however badly he has managed this season I think he will come good next. Whether in the Premiership or as more likely the Championship. Thirdly: he was dropped by the Dutch national side and won’t make their WC squad for this summer. Thus he has 2 seasons to recover his form and has a point to prove to make it back into the reckoning for the Netherlands at the Euros in 2016. I have a friend coming over from Amsterdam for Easter and I had hoped to book tickets to the game but sold out early. Just hope his presence in the country will prove a good omen for his countrymen Fer and van Wolfsvinkel!! (Fingers crossed)

  • Finn.Blue, if you are going to troll us with jokes taken off cave walls try to be more accurate with your grammar. I make it 13 errors in total such as misuse of apostrophes, capitals and spelling, including "replyed" twice. One final point, I am sure that when you return to your cave you will find the joke concludes "ruff, ruff", this being a play on words in respect of the noise a barking dog makes - much like your pathetic and increasingly unwelcome offerings. If you are not careful even Mad Brewer will dislike you.

On any other day his shot would have gone in, but like a number of his other efforts, it did not. Who really knows what happened to Fernando "Mr Sitter" Torres when he moved to Chelsea?

  • City are facing four of the best teams in the division. Why on earth should RvW suddenly start to score goals? it is quite a thought that if our record signing "striker " scores one goal, he will double his seasons total. Hooper has not exactly been a prolific scorer. Neither player had Premiership experience prior to coming to Norwich. Of course they are playing in a woefully inadequate team but their signings have been a failure. City are just two points ahead of Fulham facing the toughest four teams imaginable. Perhaps now is the time for Adams to pull up the draw bridge. Play a team of defenders, RvW and Hooper are surplus to requirements, and attempt four draws. I shudder at the thought of championship football.

  • Does not seem to matter who we play up front , all our "strikers" have a stunning ability to NOT score goals. Look to fitness a goal from set pieces or attacking mid- fielders or centre backs from corners. All too little, too late. Call me a fatalist or a realist but we have no chance and are already relegated.

  • Looking at the preseason video of RVw'S goals for Sporting Lisbon it was clear he had the space which you don't get in the Premiership. He doesn't seem to be able to turn defenders and create chances for himself. He has no physical presence like Holty or Iwan and is too easily knocked off the ball.He doesn't hold the ball up and yes,he does run about a bit which is good of him on 20k+ a week but to no great effect.NA is just trying to big him up a bit All in all as I have said all season he is just not up to it and a huge waste of money. The problem is,who is going to come in for him with a decent offer. As for Hooper,he might be ok playing off a striker but I think he is probably a Championship player and the Scottish teams he scored a lot against would not get into the Championship.I don't recall other Premiership clubs showing an interest in him.If NA wants 2 up front it might be worth a try playing him off Becchio.

  • Becchio and Elliot Bennett both played and scored for the U21s last Friday. Maybe NA's plan was for both of them to get a confidence boost in the U21s then come in and star in the last 4 games - let's hope. Also, I don't know why RVW has not been given a run out in the U21s to try and get his confidence up.

  • Alan , are you saying we should give him time ? I'll be honest with you , a whole season is plenty of time . The game today moves at a constant pace , we cannot afford to give any player the luxury of a whole season's worth of time . He may well come good next season , but as for this one he has been so ineffective that we may as well have played with ten men in all the games he played in . For next season we need a good old fashioned battering ram of a centre forward , one that will complement Hooper .

  • As I've said before on this site the brutal truth about RVW is that he's the wrong TYPE of striker for City. He needs a minder to protect him, plus wingers feeding him crosses 5 yards from goal. Unfortunately, neither of those situations is likely to occur regularly with City. Our centre-forwards have to take care of themselves + be able to barge thru the middle of the oppo back four without ceremony: The Horse, Iwan + Flecky were all cast from the same iron. By contrast, RVW looks like a male model who's mistakenly wandered onto the team bus whilst on his way to a photo-shoot. Stick him in the reserves + then sell him ASAP Neil. Please don't persist with him for the last 4 games. We all know exactly what's coming. Beccio is angry + has a point to prove. Let him start !- OTBC.

The way some so called fans carry on you may as well put him in the stocks out side the ground and through things at him, Get behind the lad like Norwich fans always have got behind there team. All strikers go through a drought, all teams go through bad patches.... 4 games left let's get behind NA.RVW. And the rest of the squad... and help us get the points we need. OTBC.

  • Have to confess I only saw the game on MOTD but I can't help thinking that the chance to RVW came from a cross from near the byline. Something that has been lacking for all of the season. Regardless of who is in the centre, we need a lot more of these sort of crosses as they are the most difficult to defend. RVW is still good at finding space, he just needs to start knocking them in starting from now. Same applies to whoever is in the middle but get the team to help itself by putting in those sort of crosses. The rest of the team has to make those chances or it does not matter who is the middle.

It is the last throw of the dice now for Norwich, needing three points to save their season as Ricky Van Wolswinkel comes off the bench with the score 0-0. 93rd minute. Deep into injury time , Snodgrass crosses with his right foot and from the edge of the area Ricky scores in the top corner. Carrow Road erupts Then I awake and look around me, at the four grey walls that surround me, and I realise, yes, I was only dreaming.............

  • OLDYELLA, I agree entirely with you. NAIL. HEAD. ON. Oh, the one exception being that you also forgot Hughton signed Becchio and year loan for Elmander. That's 4 poor striker signings! Let me re-phrase that, GULP, that's ALL of our strikers available!!! As Steve Bruce quite rightly says, "in the PL, you are only ever as good as your strikers". How true. To not have at least 1 striker in your 4 who you know is capable of scoring goals in the PL is criminal. The only thing worse is to not recognise this glaringly obvious fact at Christmas and go out and buy an available Shane Long in January to get you back on track. Ok, mistakes have been made on strikers bought last summer, but out of all the questions out there, the one big question is WHY WAS THIS NOT ADRESSED IN JANUARY?!

  • CH had a blind faith in the worst striker in Premiership history, and it was not addressed in January, in fact he made 2 poor buys in strikers, that never came up to scratch, Why? Neil played him Saturday, God knows, perhaps the club have been brainwashed with the same Videos that were sent in to sell him, surly no one ever watched him, and Hooper.. well Celtic at best a Championship Club, playing 3rd division sides week in week out, never sniffed the coffee.

From the original French, `Daviot` it meant a small tool, but has come to mean `a ship`s hoist` in English parlance. Now there`s a thing. A small `ttool`.
