'I had to complete the final laps stuck in fourth gear,' admitted Williams, who just managed to keep Lee Connell at bay despite a grassy moment at the final corner.

Meanwhile, nearest rival Andrew Ashton was watching from the sidelines as his engine blew up while holding second place which would have given him the title after winning the opening race.

Doug Cole starred in the pair of MG Trophy races, chasing after Ross Makar in the first after a second corner incident saw him restart towards the back of the grid.

In race two Cole tracked his rival until two-thirds distance when he slipped by Brundle and held on for a popular victory while second in class during the opening race secured Matthew Turnbull the title.

Neil Fowler dominated the opening MGBCV8 race but was pushed off the race two grid with a dead engine. This left James Wheeler to hound Ian Prior throughout race two but he was unable to overcome his rivals' greater straight line speed in the corners.

Morgan Challenge pole sitter Keith Ahlers started the race from the pit lane due to a low speed engine problem but once up to speed he scythed through the field to effortlessly record his 97th series victory.

Alan Brooke's quick Rover Metro GTi easily won the opening PBI MG Cup after unseating fast starting Matthew Simpson. However, a slip-up at Murrays in race two very nearly saw him lose the championship crown.

Stephen Collier did all he could in the pair of MG Midget & Sprite Challenge races by winning both at a canter but still lost the title to Paul Campfield, who finished a steady fourth in race one but retired out of the second with a fuel leak.

The locally based FORC Alfa Squadra Corse, consisting of Paul Webster, Jim Utting, Richard Drake, Stephen Chase, George Wright and Henry Chase were victorious in the Handicap section of the MGCC Four Hour Relay race which concluded the weekend's action.

In the race for overall victory Tony Hirst was closing in on the leading Morgan Mustangs team member Simon Orebi-Gann as the race was coming to an end but a puncture thwarted his efforts and his squad, Aero Racing, had to settle for second place.
