Martin Olsson apologises to Norwich City team-mates following his sending off at Wolves

Martin Olsson said sorry to his team-mates after Norwich City endured a nightmare start to their Championship return with defeat at League One champions Wolves.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Dave Edwards’ header – scored a matter of moments after Olsson’s second yellow card – gave the buoyant hosts all three points on their second-tier return, while manager Neil Adams was left to digest a City performance too much in the likeness of what sent Norwich out of the Premier League in the first place.

Olsson now misses Saturday’s at home to Watford – but may be in for more punishment, if the FA deem his push on referee Simon Hooper at the time of his dismissal worthy of action.

“It’s just one of those things,” said Bradley Johnson. “Everyone gets sent off now and again. Everyone’s going to say the sending off cost us the game, but before that we felt comfortable and even after the red card we felt comfortable, and we had the chances to score.

“He’s apologised to us, he’s a top professional and he works his socks off for the team. So he’s disappointed, as we all are, with the result.”

  • Blimey Brew you sound happy today. During the school holidays taking the train home is a nightmare. In fact, I don't. They are rammed with single mothers with endless kids, pushchairs and suitcases. Up from the smoke with their foul ways. All the kids seem to be called Jayden.

  • I, like, know where`s your`re, like, coming from, Fagen. Infested with holiday makers up here. My goodness, there are some uncouth types. Never the slightest sign of good manners in shops & pubs. Kids allowed to run riot wherever they take them. Half eaten bags of chips and other junk food strewn in the streets. And the ubiquitous "can I get..." when they order, loudly, at the counter. Rarely a pleasantry like "hello" or "please". Thank God for his gift of mortality...

  • Brew ,every time Rab approaches the burger van he uses the words 'can I get'. More annoying for me is the like syndrome. And he was like (he said) and she was like (she said) and I was like (I said). I had the misfortune to sit behind two air headed bimbo's on the train to Lpool Street who used no other words. They were both like, UEA students, like.

  • I could do that job, Matt, but I wouldn`t want to. I spent decades in management with the overriding principles of respect and courtesy at the core. Butler is an impolite person, I`m afraid. He could still mend his ways... but unlikely. Why should he? A `Village Norwich insider` of the worst kind :-(

  • The thing with playing a diamond is that you'll always be dominated on the wings. After the first half of Van Der Parra dominating down the right I was surprised we didn't change to a more 433451 to play him out and control the midfield. It's not all about the formation; Surman, Bennett, and Johnson didn't cut the mustard yesterday.

  • Whilst agreeing that the performance was overall poor, imo we have some good strikers and midfielders when we can get them all fit playing (Fer!). We certainly didn't have the best ones out there yesterday. The area that desperately needs addressing is the back 4. Whittaker, Olsson and Garrido when NA was forced to bring him on were all average even for the Championship. Martin & Turner can probably cut it if they can gain confidence from better quality full backs beside them, but where's the cover for them if they get injured or suspended? Clearly it's not Bassong.....

  • I have to agree with Stew. Wingers, centers etc etc. big man up front. Its not rocket science. If you play the diamond badly, the opposition wingers will dominate. I didnt think the first Olsson yellow was right. He got the ball. The second he put his hand on the player then he dived. Referees will always give a free kick for that. Not in my day, we would have been booked for diving. Problem with a display like this, those like Ruddy etc, will think its best to leave. I hope not. Wingers please. OTBC

  • Re Butler: Steely you are 100 per cent correct. Matt I understand what you say too but one particular guy said something negative about the Board and got a really unjustified beasting. I have never posted about Butler before but imo he appears grossly ignorant patronising and abrasive. We all know what Canary Callers can be like but there was no excuse imo. I have never liked bullies:(

  • The main problem is the total dumbing down of radio coverage in general. You haven't a chance of landing a job with BBC unless you can tick some kind of minority box, have parents that received benefits or have an uncouth regional accent. This is how Butler got his job.

  • …. I am still in a state of shock!..and I can't blame Snodgrass for this performance! .... I'm not interested whether our defence is the strongest part of our team or not!...Their 5 man job is no more than to stop the opposition scoring!.. nothing more.. nothing less!....What worries me is the set up in front of them...and against Wolves that was shocking! Those 6 men seemed all at sea, and clueless as to what was required of them!...I will take Hoolahan from most of that criticism..He at least tried to do what he can do well ! Grabban was a pathetic solitary figure...with no more support than previous strikers...Johnson tried and his passing was not too bad...but the other 3...Redmond- Bennett- Surman need the riot act read to them!...No Excuses...The two wingers need to play WIDE, and HOLD their assigned positions...Bennett OR Redmond on the right and I would suggest Murphy on the left!....Look again at Wolves wingers...They played wide all of the time widening our defence, and not coming into the middle and blocking the way!... It's now up to the coaching staff to see that these men play as a unit !.....

  • Wish I'd put a bet on a Norwich player being sent off. I said last week when Simon Hooper was announced as the referee, we were guaranteed for a few cards and he would send one of ours off. Wolves & Ipswich always seem to win when he's the official. We HAD to lose our first game, to keep up the tradition of losing the first game and getting promoted!

  • We heard you the first time, Mattias! I was just taken aback by the bullying, almost threatening, tone that Butler took with some callers. The contrast with Jolly Jamie Cureton was stark. Unprofessional in the extreme, and just plain rude. I suppose I must have heard him before, he does talk over callers and is very argumentative in an aggressive and dismissive manner. Yesterday`s performance was rather as Steely Dan describes it. As the "host" of the show, he should treat his callers as his guests and with courtesy - however daft he may privately think they are. Imagine dear old Roy Waller behaving like a yob... Unthinkable! Interesting to hear that RB`s your "pal" Matt. You know how impressed I am with petty insiderism...

  • Leave my pal Rob allow Brew ;) He does do that though. I have to admit though a majority of the Canary Call callers deserved shooting. Harsh? Not really. Maybe a cull is required. First called was insane. Literally, im not a doctor but he needs help. Seriously. Thing is he consistently calls up the show. Whether its positive or a negative caller it always brings shame on our club. I wouldnt be able to do Robs job as my finger would consistently be on the hang up button or i'd be crying with laughter. Freedom of speech but christ have a think before picking up the phone. On topic, I really hope Olsson doesn't get an even bigger suspension for the shove on the ref. Frustration boiled over but wouldnt be surprised if the FA made an example out of us. Olsson is one of our key players but cant defend him, 2 yellow card fouls, lucky it wasnt a penalty and a shove on the ref for good measure. Ended our hopes of getting anything.

  • Butler has been around for a year or two Brew. When they first used him ,I thought they had plucked an over excited yob from the crowd to provide some 'insight'. He has a bad voice which you would have expected to rule out a career on the radio, but now he seems to be a regular on Partridge. He was even on this morning.

  • Did Olsson ever have that shoulder op? If not, should he have? Radio Partridge was an interesting listen yesterday. Jamie Cureton was waffling away amiably, in a manner reminiscent of ol` "Yellahspecs Adams"... The anchor man (rhyme there somewhere...) was a bullying item called Rab C Butler or something, who hectored dissenting Canary Callers who dared disagree with him.

  • Two worries here Martin. First you probably told NA that you were fit for the second half, when it was fairly clear that you were not. Second NA should have substituted you anyway after the booking and tough tackles of the first half. Pushing the ref was just plain stupid. Gör bättre!!
