Malky Mackay has refused to be drawn on whether he is poised to become Norwich City’s new manager but the Scot is desperate to return to the game as soon as possible.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Mackay is believed to be a on shortlist that includes Neil Adams drawn up by the Canaries’ top brass who are closing in on a replacement for Chris Hughton to lead the club’s fightback after relegation from the Premier League.

Gianfranco Zola and Neil Lennon also continue to be linked with the vacancy with the club’s board stating after Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Arsenal they aimed to make an appointment within a week.

The ex-City stalwart was at the Football Writers’ Dinner in London on Thursday, along with Hughton, but Mackay was coy when asked if he is close to taking over at Carrow Road.

The former Watford and Cardiff boss is now free to return to management after resolving his differences with the Bluebirds over the past week. Cardiff were also relegated along with City and Fulham after Mackay’s dismissal in December following a lengthy stand off with owner Vincent Tan.

“There are various teams at the moment out there who don’t have a manager and like everyone else I just have to wait and see,” he told Skysports, who sponsored the event. “But I’m looking to get back into management as quickly as possible.

“I really enjoyed testing myself against the best coaches in the world. We had some tough games and there’s times during those games that you really see the difference in world class players. Other times we competed really well and we managed to beat the champions (Manchester City), which Cardiff should be proud of.”

  • No fee, Gibbo, you greedy g!t. Did you know the Eurovision Scone Contest is being staged at Wroxham Barns in the very near future? UK entry is a `fusion` creation baked with Durham Wheat & laver bread, on a tray greased with oilseed.. oil. Main flavourings are stuff from Scotland & N. Ireland that we`ve never heard of. Covertly the flavourings will, in fact, be Norfolk Lavender and Suffolk Punch. Served with a beetroot, peat and samphire purée on a bed of deep-fried Mars Bar. £22.95. A snip. Have you any idea when it will happen as I need to check with my social secretary for the month ahead. We're still waiting for the announcement from the board re the manager appointment, could I suggest the winner of the Eurovision song contest as heshe'd keep the lads on their toes by threatening to join them in the bathshowers, we'd sail away with it next season back to the prem. By the way will I get a signing on fee?

  • 3\1 ON, zebbee? I don`t know much about betting, but isn`t this about the usual stage the bookies close up their books? No news yet from the Karra Kremlin, on teletext or anywhere else . Is "Machianalli`s Week" up yet? I know little about Lennon, beyond his hate\hate relationship with Rangers "fans" and those of a similar persuasion, but on the footy front, wouldn`t he be likely to bring key members of his backroom team with him. More likely than would be the case for Shyboy Sherwood? And certainly for Malky. I sometimes wonder whether this "Package Deal" management system is a bit unhealthy, compared with a "Pick `n` Mix" approach. "PD" Can lead to what seemed a half-decent manager (eg Hughton) having to drag along with him a ball & chain of an assistant (eg Calderwood).

  • I emphasise that I was but the mere conduit for that missive from Blaffen Wijs, who has been cruelly cast from these cubicles. Apart from some necessary adjustment to his spelling and syntax, the message was very much from him. ;-) I think his mission was to arrange a game of fantasy five-a-side footy, though a quiz would be more in keeping with my personal fitness levels. Btw, Fagen, I celebrated my doctor telling me that I wasn`t dead, but needed to give up beer, by having a couple of pints of Nelson`s Revenge in your favourite hostelry, The Glass House. Also took the opportunity to try pint of same in King`s Head. Better selection of beers than Pargeters` Pantaloons at the moment.... Blaffen as Quizmeister. Hmmmm - the Jerry Springer\Ar$ene Wenger clone morphs into.... Bambie Gasgroin. Such fun. Hi, Crab. You can play a Ray Wilkins part in midfield - only pass the ball sideways.

He is highly qualified as he says he is a personal confidant of everybody who is important at the Carra, and that every manager we have ever had or are likely to have is a fool. It would be good to get a long distance voyager on board. Perhaps Lobbo (happy 60th to him), BP2, Timbo or Lincs would be good. Of course my ultimate guests would be Norton and Whipsnade seated together and chatting away like long lost brothers. Saving the Green Jack for one of those WC games. Lennon,an Irishman, has only managed Celtic. The SPL is not sufficient experience to manage a club in the Championship. Sherwood is tough and has plenty of experience. Adams ,nice man, a first team coach. Malky a failed Premiership manager. Lets hope the board look long and hard at up and coming managers before making an appointment. • I have been asked to relay a message from an ex-contributor who has been peripheralised to the margins. "This infighting has to stop. Without no footy to analyse for 3 months, it is going to get worse before it gets better. So, how about setting up a game of our own? Veterans vs... Other Veterans. We had 5 in the pub on Wednesday, and Gibbo may soon sign up? That`s a total of Six. four more, and we could have a 5-a-side Match.Gibbo gets my nod but he has to be initially screened by Fagen, before explicit vetting by Mrs. Fagen. Then a thumbs up from the Oberbrouwer (arrogant person that he is). Those who passed the portals of the Artisan`s Anatomy (or sat in a window box outside, abusing tobacco), can vouch for the thorough decency of all those assembled. Genial sorts, and one of them arrives by Reindeer with a sac(sic) of Gifts. I`d like to nominate oldtimer, kenfoggo, TKMaxx, normanhall, and waclor, amongst others. Chutney, Cesp!t, ncfcbore, and the likes need not apply. Their inability to keep up with the banter has left them bitter & twisted. This might manifest itself in violence should alcohol be imbibed. The Landlord (nice guy), wouldn`t like that. Chances are, there may be some Ipswich trolls amid the aggressors; too frightened to venture away from their keyboards to engage with real people. Well balanced by a chip on each shoulder. You`d soon be bored by debating NCFC stuff in an affable manner, anyway. As long as we can get that 5-a-side footy game sorted. What fun! Peace & Harmony, Waffen Blijs. OTBC.

  • Apologies if my sentiment has already been expressed but Neil Lennon would seem to make sense. Firstly, we have the Scottish connection with McNally (not to mention a few Scots in our side) and then we have Lennon who wants to manage in the Premiership. Surely, having the opportunity to remould Norwich into a Premiership side of his making, leading them to promotion and then upgrading it with a few more players of his choosing would be a better route for him than stepping straight into managing a premiership team. Wish I had thought of this before he became the bookies favourite (seems the false Crooks twitter account hasnt affected that betting).

This is almost always a mistake in any industry. How do you know how good a candidate is with no stick to measure by? I'd rather we interviewed 5 or 6 for the job. Adkins hardly seems to have been considered yet surely he should be? Rosler worth talking to as well, besides the more "obvious" cadidates. Sometimes the apparent "stand-out" bloke ( Malky or Lennon) doesn't fit with the club or team. I think we need to cast the net wider tbh.

That be Malky. I can already see him giving the snake pit a thumbs up in response to their "Malky give us a wave" chant. Who do I celebrating a massive achievement or promotion? Get images of Lennon passionately holding his fist up to the fans with that one. Who do I see getting involved in spats with fans by Xmas? Can only see that being Sherwood after hes questioned about losing to Brentford at Carrow Road. Who can I see getting Sacked before the seasons over? Zola....has simply done nothing to inspire me hes a manager at West Ham or Watford. Can just see the nice man, poor manager headlines all over again. Going with an "old boy" so to speak doesn't necessarily work. Personally I also get a good feeling about Neil Lennon. It would be someone fresh; with no previous connection to the club and a reputation for attacking football and of course Champions League experience which would be ideal for Norwich. We need to step out in faith here and do something quite revolutionary. Go for it McNally. Now is the time to redeem yourself. otbc

I think Malky nor Lennon nor Sherwood will want to join us now we're in the Championship, and all 3 will be waiting for a Prem deal if they can get one, hence the links with Zola I'm afraid, who hasn't got the CV for any premiership club. I think we may be surprised, and a lesser name could be installed. I just hope it's not Adams, Zola, or Warnock. I wouldn't be that disappointed with Rosler, Howe, Adkins, Clarke or my personal choice, Garcia. I know lots of people in Brighton, and they say Garcia had them playing attractive footy, and not to believe a word of it if people say otherwise.
