Magpies suffer defeat on the road

Sevenoaks 3, Harleston Magpies Ladies 0: Magpies travelled away to Sevenoaks determined to put last week’s disappointing performance behind them.

Although Magpies again returned home without any points they can be encouraged by producing a very committed and competitive performance.

After a promising start, with Hannah Palmer troubling the Sevenoaks defence, Magpies were unfortunate not to take the lead, as Holly Baker was ready to put the ball in the back of the net the whistle blew to award Magpies a penalty corner instead.

Sevenoaks confidently transferred the ball in defence and started to put Magpies under pressure with some skilful passages of play. Magpies put themselves on the back foot going 1-0 down after 11 minutes. When Lisa Griffin made a good initial save, Sevenoaks’ Nicola Wood was the quickest to react and lifted the ball past the diving keeper into the back of the net.

Following further pressure from Sevenoaks, Magpies conceded their second goal of the game just before half-time when Jet Van Zalen finished from close range.

Magpies started the second half brightly with Charlotte Harrison and Katrina Warnes on the left and Verity Blyth and Hannah Palmer on the right running purposefully into the Sevenoaks circle forcing Sevenoaks to defend in numbers.

Despite Magpies dominating possession for large periods of the second half they were unable to convert the opportunities they created.

Sevenoaks sealed their victory with a third goal from Lucy Wood in the 63rd minute.

Magpies’ demanding run of fixtures continues next Sunday when they face league leaders Surbiton at Weybread.

• Harleston Magpies Men 1, Teddington 2

Magpies slipped to defeat at home to Teddington to leave them second from bottom in the Men’s Conference East.

Warren D’Souza opened the scoring for Teddington in the 28th minute and Jason Marfleet doubled their advantage.

Stuart Leate pulled one back for Magpies but it wasn’t enough.
