Lowestoft Town embark upon the second instalment of their double header against Canvey Island this weekend when they travel to Essex looking to strengthen their promotion bid in the Ryman League Premier.

The Trawlerboys came from 2-0 down to beat Canvey 3-2 on Tuesday night in the Alan Boon Cup and the Gulls are likely to be out for revenge when they entertain the Blues at Park Lane.

The Trawlerboys could be boosted by the return of Adrian Forbes, who is making good progress from the thigh injury that has kept him out for the last six weeks. It could be too soon to throw the former Norwich City winger in from the start, but the management team could be tempted to put him on the bench.

Forbes admitted he is desperate to get back in the playing fold, although he is wary of aggravating the injury he sustained against Salisbury at the start of December.

“It’s been a pain because it’s one of those injuries that, because of the way I play and the way I run, it’s not something that I can run through,” he said. “It was always something that could really tear if I try to cut corners and come back too quickly.”

With the wealth of attacking options Lowestoft now have at their disposal, Forbes has his eyes on the right-back slot, which has been up for grabs since Andrew Cave-Brown’s work commitments ruled him out.

The 32-year-old filled in against Wealdstone and Billericay earlier in the season and he feels making the transition to full-back could prolong his playing career.

“In the two games that I played there I really enjoyed it – I never thought I would,” he said. “I probably see myself as a right back and I think Chappo has said that by playing there I can probably prolong my career for another couple of years because it’s not as energetic.”
