The smile on Liam Ridgewell’s face said it all – the joy of a superb victory, as well as a glint in the eye that the last week has not been anywhere near as bad as those outside The Hawthorns would have you imagine.

Saido Berahino’s post-Cardiff bust-up could have gone two ways. The wheels may have become completely detached from the Baggie-wagon, or Pepe Mel’s squad would be renewed brothers in arms for the Premier League relegation scrap. Everyone knows the answer to that one now.

“We had a difficult last weekend, conceding the goal when we did, and here we showed what we were about, coming back and putting on a very good performance,” said centre-back Liam Ridgewell – seemingly ignoring the obvious, until prodded a little harder.

“You call it a fall out – but we call it wanting to win and making sure that we came here today and put a good performance. Hopefully that happens every week and then we get a 1-0 win after it.

“That was the attitude in the dressing room. We showed here what a good team we are, and we had to do that.”

Ridgewell worked briefly under Norwich boss Chris Hughton at Birmingham, and saved a few words for his old manager: “I don’t think they felt the pressure more than us.

“I think they went out to win the game as much as we did. Chris has done a fantastic job at Norwich in keeping them where they are and I am sure they will do very well towards the end of the season.

“We have some more breathing space now. It pushes us up the table and that is what we need to do. We have Spurs at home next week and hopefully we can take this and the Cardiff game into that one.”
