Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson declared he is fit and ready to play his part in the club’s Premier League survival push after a 60-minute run out in Tuesday night’s 2-1 development league win over Everton’s Under-21s.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The 25-year-old made his long awaited return following a two-month lay-off with a back problem in front of the watching Chris Hughton at Carrow Road. Howson was an unused substitute in the 1-0 win over Tottenham but the key midfielder is ready if required against Aston Villa this weekend.

“If you had asked me four weeks ago I would have probably said yes I was ready,” he said. “I think so. I had a good week’s training under my belt and then this 60 minutes so I feel confident in my ability. It is not up to me. It is up to the manager and going on last Sunday’s performance I don’t think he needs to change it in midfield the way the lads performed. My job now is to keep those lads on their toes so they have to keep putting in those type of performances.”

Howson admitted his long term lay-off had been difficult to take.

“It was a frustrating time for me,” he said. “It was one of those things that perhaps you don’t realise what you have got until its gone. You miss it so much and I am just glad to be out there and playing a part. It was just one of those things. I had a problem with the back the last couple of games before the Swansea one. We had to get it scanned and that showed there was something we had to get some rest. I got a bit of stick off the lads because I couldn’t really do any type of training. It was a case of rest and let it heal. Hopefully that is all behind me and we can look forward. I was still in most days. I had Christmas Day off and the odd few days but mostly I was getting treatment. It wasn’t a case of a jolly for the past eight weeks.”

  • Flying Canary, youre exactly right, after last Sunday it would send out the wrong message to change the team. Just as it sent the wrong message after we drew with Man city then the clown changed it for west ham.

  • CCR even covered Roy Orbison`s "Ooby Dooby", a minor 1950s Rockabilly hit on Billboard. Not a Big `O` composition - it was `written` by Wade Moore & Dick Penner, two college chums of Orbison.

  • I cant believe it. Maybe they really do listen to us fans on this site. Two weeks ago I was complaining Mark Robson had not played anyone from the senior squad in the under 21s since september and lo and behold Howson and Becchio played for them tonight... fantastic. Now lets give RVW and Elmander a run out next Under 21s match so they can build up some confidence in their finishing.

  • Can see why he was one of Leeds Utds youngest ever captains. Only issue is he returns at a time when were playing relatively well and cant really justify walking straight back in. This isnt the first time we've longed for an injured player to return and when he does he cant get back in because those ahead suddenly pick up form. Its a good problem to have though. The more options and competition the better IMO.

  • Jigs69, even I felt a flicker of optimism during that Spurs game. Let`s hope the team can sustain that level and not flop against Lambo`s lot. I believe Johnson could prove to be a much better player than many of us thought - he seems to be a `partnership player` and he clearly relishes working with Tettey. Unless something dramatic happens to player form in the final 11 games, he is my choice for PotS. Olsson close, maybe. Just `turning up` is a big factor for both. Good stuff as always, Mattias. Keep it coming, please.

  • Good summary buddy! Give it a day or two and things will be doom & gloom again. Heck ive been saying for months were doomed when it comes to playing Holt & Lambert. Its destiny Holt will score the winner against us......however....suddenly thought, how ironic would it be if a certain Mr Hoolahan scored or created the winner for NCFC? Look at me putting positive spin on things for a change ;)

  • Howson is within a whisker of becoming a real Prem-class act. It would be a shame to drop Johnson, though. Does anybody agree with me that BJ has perked up no end since his pal `Duracell Bunny` Tettey returned? His movement and passing both look much better. A bit of synergy there. Good to think we can have somebody as good as Jonny on the bench to replace tired legs and freshen things up. It has been a great shame that Howson, Tettey and E. Bennett have been missing so much. I wonder if we`ll see EB again this season? If there were to be a change, maybe Hooper for RvW, but give both of them significant time on, as appropriate. Whither Becchio. Or should that be `wither, Becchio`? Poor s0d.

  • Glad to see optimism bursting out all over. Let's see if the stats justify this spring fever. To date against top half sides we have averaged 0.8 points per game and against against bottom half sides 1.31 ppg. If that is maintained we gain 4 points from the 5 remaining games against top half sides and 7.86pts from the 6 bot half games. That's 39 or 40 points.

  • Totally agree Mad. I openly admit to not being part of the Johnson Fan club and often complain about his usual lack of finding a NCFC player with his range of passing. Lately though hes been POTM for me. Really perked up. While im not a fan of always playing two DMC players (Tettey & Johnson), its worked a treat against the bigger sides who count on a "in the hole" player doing the damage for them & making them tick. Can understand why people are getting Fer's back to a degree but his quality in undoubted and even hes picked up again of late. Fingers crossed this healthy competition lasts a while longer

  • We perhaps need a sense of balance here. Not only do posters on this site need a consistent approach but so do the team. Good to see Howson back and he is certainly capable of making a real difference for us. Interesting to see Man U on the box last night. Their Dutch striker looked awful and contributed very little. With regard to Rooney, when he got a new deal I think they put the decimal point in the wrong place! Be interesting to see where we actually finish before reaching a verdict!!

  • Everyone did superb against Spurs but I was thinking yesterday there was someone else deserving of a mention that doesn't normally get a good word said about him....that man.....regular Championship referee Craig Pawson. Thought he handled the game superbly. Even more so because ive not heard one person mention him from either sides support. More evidence he did well. Yes there wasnt anything to major to call but he handled what was a high pressure atmosphere game superbly. Yellow cards to both teams, strict, fair and to the point. Let the game go with it only being pulled back if neither team gained an advantage on that move. Thought he was Triffic as old Arry would say. To be fair alot of the so called Elite Premier League refs could take alot from him. Too many seem set on being the centre of the attention (Clattenburg i'm look at you) or seem to shy & naive to control a game (Mr Jones, Moss & Mason im looking directly at you). I prefer the old days when you very rarely knew the refs name without reading the match day programme.

  • Good to be going into Sundays game with options on the bench, interesting one from Jigs, Redmond would feel hard done by not to start but can see the thought of bringing him on later and giving pilks a chance. Depending on how game is going maybe drop a DMC and bring on Howson, or if Fer flags then sub him. Lots of choices for me and it depends how game is going, just hope CH is reading the game and can improve his selection and timing of the subs.

It was a great all round performance by all 11 players. Great to know that Howson is on the bench to add a bit of zip to the midfield if anyone flags. I've said it before but I'm looking for 3 points at Man U after the debacle yesterday. Shame we're not playing them a bit earlier.

Really difficult call for the weekend, because the team did so well Sunday that I think it would be harsh to start Jonny over someone else, but I must say that having Tettey Fer and Howson in midfield again is rather tantalising. Maybe Howson for Johnson at 60-70 minutes possibly?

But we need to wait on the day - it's a fact of life that people have off days - on Saturday that could be any of the three - and that person should then be replaced. It's no disgrace, just fair on everyone, including the player having an off day.

  • MB, you know I've been a Johnson critic, but I can forgive him everything if he continues to play like he did on Sunday. Howson gives us that spark going forward and behind whichever non-striker Hughton picks he gives us more attacking options. Fer to start, Howson on at 60 mins. I'd also like to see Pilkington start instead of Redmond. he will want to get one over Lambert and he always does well against Villa. Redmond on at 60 mins also to rip their tired accident-prone defence apart. Haven't felt so positive for 18 months. Hope it's not another false dawn!

  • ha @ Dan! Only average. Its a calculator that site rather than a legit person. As of right now thanx to the spurs game it has us finishing dead on 38points instead of a .5! That would mean 14th place based on everyone elses form and stats etc. Obviously after the spurs game stats mean diddly squat though. Same site projects us having a 19.5% chance of a being relegated. Disappointing that the site also gives us ZERO% chance of getting in the top 4. Thats my hopes for the season gone....sack the manager.

But he will surely feature in the run-in? Good call to suggest RvW in particular gets a run out with the u 21s. He is in desperate need of sharpness and above all confidence.

Before the Spurs game the stats they had for NCFC based on form, records etc...was we would finish on 35.5points and that would mean 18th place finish. They also had us down as having a 44% chance of getting relegated. However......1 stat busting win against a side the 'stats' didnt see us winning and the outlook changes totally. If you check said website right now they have us down as achieve 39points now instead of 35.5pts and our chance of relegation is now something like 19.5% instead of 44%. Im going to pay less attention to stats now.

I have to say I would have taken Fer off with about 15 minutes to go against Spurs as he was starting to flag a bit but he battled on, even when switched to the left wing where he cannot really play that well.

Edam's been banished to the naughty step (mercifully without his laptop); Brewer has recovered from his trip to the dentist which left him grouchy and has now fallen in lurv with sausages (ok, hotdogs) as I predicted on another board; Mattias and his fellow time-travelling street vendors are praising referees and brightening things up with a little DIY; Chrissy has gone from zero to hero; Johnny H is fit as a fiddle and raring to bid "Asta la Villa" to Lambo, Hollty and the rest of our nemesis team; City have screeched to a halt inches short of the Happisburgh cliff tops, have turned around and are now scaling the heights of Mount Europa League; the BLUE sky of late February is only surpassed by the warm YELLOW sun, ..........and all is well in the kitchen. It's tempting to conclude that "Love Grows where my Gek Broewer Goes". But watch this space. Things can change so quickly.......funny old game, football.

  • I hope that our highly paid management team is not resorting to getting their ideas from an internet chat forum, but stranger things have happened. For Sunday, it is hard to argue against the Spurs starting 11, though I agree that Pilks might be good for run-out. Look to mix it up with some early substitutions to keep the pressure up on the Villa defence. Lambo teams are usually more wobbly there and it is about time we really got it together in that department. Hooper's cut-back to Tetty last week was the most frustrating, leaving Tetty attempting a rather camp highland fling to try and back-heel the ball into an empty net.
