Jonny Howson opting to look away from Sunderland’s part in Norwich City’s Premier League fate

All Norwich City eyes will be on the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night as Norwich City’s Premier League status hangs by a thread – all that is, except for Jonny Howson.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries are relying on West Bromwich Albion to win at Sunderland, as the first of three steps that provide the only and unlikely route left to survival.

But a point or more for in-form Sunderland will leave Norwich relegated to the Championship after a three-season Premier League stay.

“No, I won’t be following it,” said Howson. “Whenever I follow a game you like to sit there, relax and enjoy it.

“And that obviously won’t be the case. You’ll be cheering West Brom on for everything. So it’s not worth it. We can’t affect it, sat in front of a TV, laptop or radio. The result will be what it’s going to be.

“It’ll be up to the personal views for everyone whether they do or not. There’s nothing we can do to affect it now, so whether you want to put yourself through watching it… I think it’s a similar situation to last season when Wigan were playing a midweek game at home to Swansea.”

That game saw Wigan slip up, and Norwich’s safety was all but secured with two games to go. This time around it’s much more grim for the Canaries, who would also need Sunderland to lose at home to Swansea on Sunday’s Premier League climax – while beating Arsenal at Carrow Road.

City’s situation is already giving rise to ‘what if’ questions over the current squad’s individual futures.

“I can only speak from my personal point of view, and I’m sure everyone has got different views – but for me, it’s obviously been a bit of a long season and it’s a case of going away, having a good summer and that’s the aim,” said Howson, who signed a new four and a half year contract with City in December.

“If the worst does happen, then being brutally honest it’s not something I have thought about too much and I won’t until it actually does happen.

“But yes, it would be a case of coming back in, putting things right and getting back to where everyone wants to be, which is the Premier League.”

  • Hi, Wivenhoe. Are you coming to Steely Dan`s Bevvy Bash at the Builders` Buttox? Old Smoothie, indeed. My role model is Le$lie Phillips (Ding-dong, a popsy... Hellooo..), but I cannot get on with Elg00d`s beer. Always seems flat & watery to me. Adman`s is a beer that has changed beyond recognition. I loved it in the `70s to `90s but now it`s a "no-no". I`ve tried all their offerings, from Lighthouse, thro` Ghost Ship to Broadside, but they all just taste like.... Adman`s. On the periphery of Eastern Angular, we have Oakham Brewery of... Peterborough, and Bateman`s of Wainfleet, Lincs. Both excellent, though quite different, styles of beer. I also failed to mention Mauldon`s and Nethergate - both reputable producers of professionally brewed beers. Mauldon`s is in Sudbury, Suffolk, while Nethergate has migrated across the border from Clare, Suffolk, into Essex. Just. The Pride of Norfolk has to be Woodforde`s. Nelson`s Revenge is probably the best cask beer in the World - definitely! (Apologies to Carlsberg`s Massive Marketing Machine). Offerings at the Gyprocker`s Groin, Cowgate, Naaridge, were a bit ordinary or weird yesterday. Hopefully, by next Weds, there might be a change in product profile. Failing that, there`s always The King`s Cranium across the road. A nice stroll under the covered t0!let under the flyover, and past Mattias`s Hotdog-Hut Tardis. Such fun!

  • Yes steely , one of the few things i miss from the UK is good beer at reasonable prices , and of course our beloved carrow road ( maybe not so much this year). The thing that saddens me most about relegation is the fact i won't be able to watch the games anymore .it was the highlight of my weekend and the internet streams were getting better and better in quality. Here's hoping for a quick return to the prem .OTBC

  • Spot on, malaga flier! I don`t like to disagree with my mentor, Steely Dan, but to me all Adnam`s beers taste equally rough. A bit like drinking liquid sandpaper. The only beer that is worse, IMHO, is Sharp`s (Coor`s) Doom Bar (aka Mars Bar) which tastes like liquefied Sharp`s Devon Cream Toffee of yesteryear. G.King beers are universally extremely average. Best of Anglia? Woodforde`s and Green Jack. Wolf also pretty good. The rest - give it a rest. Elgood`s? OMG.

  • Well said French Canary. Ghost Ship was my beer of the year in 2013. I did sample some nice beer in Lille a couple of years ago. One was an extremely fruity and scented beer from over the Belgium border. Fell in love with it until I realised it was priced at 7 euro for a little over half a pint. Suddenly I didn't want any more.

  • We should be Ok in the Championship. After all half the team are at about that level! However I think there is another problem: how many of them really care, really feel for the club and are prepared to work their socks off for each other? I fear too many have becomne victims of Hughton's negativity and don't appear to believe they can win a match any longer. Unless this psychological problem can be addressed we will need a big clear-out and replacing players with ones who are not tainted by Hughton, defeat and relegation. To this end and while I have much respect for what Neil Adams has achieved, I am not sure an internal promotion would be in the best interests of the club and supporters. We need a manager with the character, drive and enthusiasm of a Tony Pulis. May not agree with his tactics but nobody can argue with his achievements, especially this season, dragging Palace from relegation certs to mid-table respectability (or should I say mid-table mediocrity to quote a certain club Chairman!!!).

  • We've had better players this season but a worse team. Bassong not an on field leader. No one stood out in midfield. Passing, especially the killer ball, not good enough. Injuries came at crucial points and not enough flexibility to manage that. Loans generally ineffective Can't think of many performances I enjoyed.

We will be one of the big fish in a pool of minnows made up of has-been's, journey-men, and not-quite-good-enough's. Whilst we will have the whip hand as far as spending power goes, and be able to bring through a couple more of the youth team players. Wasn't a relegation 'blip' all part of McNally's 10 year plan in any case? OTBC!!!

So come on you players and give it one season to make amends.

  • Hi Dubya, my old benefactor! Look here, sunshiney man - WBA have 36 points and a GD of minus 13, with 2 games to play. We have 33 points, a GD of minus 32 (!) and 1 game to play - against Ar$enal (Wembley Berth Awaits... a glimmer of hope?) So, W. Brom need to lose both games for us to have a "chance" of overtaking them, in which case we can`t overtake Sunderland. WBA, `realistically`, have nothing to play for. What bets on a boring 0-0 stalemate, which would be enough to sink us anyway. Dubya, I really am in awe of your potent brand of Sunny Optimism. It must be the Lotus-eating lifestyle you lead, flitting from The Unruly Arabica Extremities, via The Philippines, to your Tax Haven in The Cayman Quadrangle for conflabs with your Banker, Crocodile Putnee. Don`t you ever get tired? You are indefatigable in your ingenuousness. In the lyrics (nearly) of The Wordsmith of Wink, Texas, "I don`t believe you, you`re not the truth - No one could be as glad as you... Ooh, oh, Happy Chappy". Bless your heart. ;-)

  • I don`t think we should pin too many hopes on Warm Beach Awaits, if their performance against us last season is anything to go by. Hopefully, some sort of "local pride" will spur them on to finish above Villa? Or the potential £2m+ available for finishing a few places higher? I would need another massive consignment of Dubya Canaria`s Premier Pollyanna Potion to sustain such fantastical hopes (Hint, hint..). I don`t really see Jonny as much of a "Bossman". Nor (the returning?) Surman. What will become of Foxy? Will Fer f*** off and find a new Prem Club? Whoever the new manager turns out to be, he (she?) has a massive job just to steady the ship. Btw; Tony Pulis is quoted as saying that Crystal Palace is a great club with superb fans - BUT they "are `way behind where they should be". Strong words from a confident manager. Can you imagine our erstwhile simpering wimpleton saying stuff like that? `I fort we were up against anuver team wiv a lot of quality players, and vough the lads put in a good shift, I fort we lacked a bit of quality in the final furd...`. Etc. Now the sole bottom scorers in the Prem. 28 goals. In Lambo`s single Prem season, they got 52! Goals against stood at 66 - and we are currently on 60. Great improvement there, then? NOT.

  • For me the central midfield has been one of the main problems this season and that includes Tettey who often looks uninterested as well as Fer and Howson. Johnson at least tries to win the ball, just a shame his passing is not up to scratch. Howson's best position is probably in the hole but I still think Snodgrass looks better there as well as he put far more effort in every game not just once a month. One thing is for sure we need some serious surgery next season if we are to bounce back up.

  • You gotta hope that West Brom turn up tonight and go for a win. Realistically they still need the points, so playing for a draw is not really an option. Sunderland have done really well (as have Palace) to lift themselves out of very bad looking positions a couple of months back.... City only have themselves to blame, but a WBA win tonight would at least make it exciting going into the final game. our chances of survival are probably only 5 to 10%, but let's live in hope..........
