John Ruddy aims to prove he was worth a place at the World Cup with England – by earning Norwich City promotion from the Championship.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper had been expected to get the call for Brazil from Roy Hodgson, only for the England manager to opt for Fraser Forster and Ben Foster as his Joe Hart deputies.

With City having to fend off interest from Chelsea 12 months ago, some fear Premier League relegation may see Ruddy’s exit before the end of the transfer window.

“I was disappointed to miss out on the World Cup but I’m more determined than ever now to make sure I prove to people why I feel I should have gone, and hopefully we can do that by getting promoted,” said Ruddy.

“We know how tough it’s going to be. We’ve been in there before and it’s a tremendously tough league to get out of. But we are going to give it our all and like I said, as long as we can keep developing as a squad and as a club, we should be fine.”

The signing of striker Lewis Grabban on Thursday helped that – and Ruddy is confident City will be able to keep the nucleus of last season’s squad together.

“I think so – I think the club is in a fantastic position,” added Ruddy, talking to Talksport. “We’re debt-free, which hardly any club in England can say about themselves. And we’ve obviously made strides to improve the squad as well by signing Lewis Grabban. He scored 20-odd goals in the Championship last season, so if he can bring that to our squad…

“I think that was probably the one area we were missing last year, which was just putting the ball in the back of the net.”

  • Ponder on the imponderable, LincsCan! If, as you suggest, Becchio was imposed on Hughton, who did the imposing? And for what motive? If it was a ploy just to get rid of Moro, then it would have been cost-effective to just loan him out and take a contribution to his wages - not bother with the (virtually) unemployed Luca. Reportedly, Leeds got about £200k as a balancing fee in the deal too. Were there other players imposed on the hapless Hughton? Perhaps, from the outset, Machianalli didn`t trust Hughton with the transfer cash? Then again, Hughton did make Garrido a permanent signing, then promptly ignored him, too, even when it became apparent that Olsson needed a shoulder operation. Perhaps Hughton`s just a tad Toc H lamp-ish in the old brainbox department?

  • Doubt if the mystery of Benchio will ever be solved unless the player reveals all once he moves on (which surely he must). His arrival seemed to come about, as I recall, when failed mid season attempts to sign Hooper went to the wire. Not illogically we turned to our nursery club, Leeds, and took one of theirs. We assumed it was Hughton's signing but soon became apparent the manager did not rate him. I am not aware he has made waves behind the scenes although you would not blame him. Curiously, Adams saw nothing in the guy for the last 5 games so there must be an inherent reason to leave him out.

  • I`m all in favour of smallish strikers, LincsCan. Just thought perhaps a big one `in the mix` might give us options `going forward`. I want to know the truth about the Becchio Fiasco. Or even the Fecchio Biasco. Signing Bewilderwood`s old pal Bunn is one thing, and helping Hughton`s little pal Guterierrez to top up his pension is understandable, but what is the hidden motive in Benchio`s expensive, non-participatory purchase\partex deal? Surely not just a ploy to get rid of Morison? What was Luca`s pay per playing minute?

  • You're right MB (of course you are) the Chris Lakey article is a joke, I mean, he is joking, oh, you know what I mean - being funny rather than "you must be joking". Ha, ha said the clown (Manfred Mann). Re McCormack, is there a minimum height requirement for our strikers? (A Chris Lakey article I missed?). Maybe we can have Crouch back. Do you remember when coppers had to be 6ft? Or was that the Met and 5ft10" elsewhere?

  • Seems like a good ploy, BW. How would I survive without you as my Mentor upon High? Tor Mentor. Do you recall that wonderful bit of geographical tautology? `Torpenhow Hill`. Hill hill hill hill. G`waan. Even round these paaarts there`s a How Hill = Hill hill. But there`s no sign anywhere of an actual... Hill. Normal for Norfolk. Mattias is defo Mathias Becchio, younger Bro of Luciano and the best Osso Buco cook that ever cared to cater at Colney. Trust me, I`m a complete culinarist.

  • Again on Becchio (because of the Leeds\McCormack link) my little mind still boggles at the fact he`d scored 20 goals in 31 games for Leeds when we acquired him. Did we just want him for his high wages? A Trophy Wage Bill?? Too high for Leeds to afford! At 6` 1+", he could still play a part for us as target man? When the Karra Kremlin Kabinet Diaries are open to scrutiny, perhaps we`ll find out what this is\was all about. I`m not ruling out incompetence, or worse... Investigative journalism needed. Dream on.

  • A light-hearted but thoughtful piece today, by Chris Lakey, was not open to comments. Mr. Lakey should be a role model for the junior journos at Archant. Along with Chris Goreham, he proves there is always hope. LincsCan, Ross McCormack is another "little un`" - about 5`8" or so? Mattias is the expert on height - he`ll be back tomorrow ;-) McCormack scored 29 goals last season for Leeds. Becchio did quite well there too - then he came here.

  • A new article by Chris Lakey has appeared (without the facility to comment) citing the options available if Ruddy moves. I thought journos were supposed to do spoiler stories on other publications. He also gives a ridiculous wish list of Prem rejects who we would struggle to sign if still in the PL, let alone the Chump. It's a job, I suppose.

  • Glad to see you are extant, Pa Snipps. I`m a great admirer of yours, and of your "Chevron" formation. I wish I`d thought of it first. You see, if you`d... disappeared, I could have claimed the concept as my own. Which is why I tried to run a check on that young pretender, Parsnip. I hope you`re keeping a close eye on Stew, because I still think he has his eyes on Ma`s dumplings. At risk of being seen as an Archant-knocker, it is interesting that they still trot out the official Karra Kremlin lines - for instance, emphasising how "decisive" Norwich were in grabbing Grabban. Clearly, "decisiveness" is an image the Hip-joined Hyacinth and Machianalli wish to nurture. This strategem is heavily reliant on `Goldfish Memory Syndrome` being rife amongst Canary fans. NCFC\Archie should be safe there. The Season Ticket rebellion, as highlighted in one of Archie`s impeccable Polls, didn`t happen. Archie could retrieve some credibility if it stopped behaving as the Provisional Wing of NCFC`s propaganda machine. I wonder how Kei Kamara`s getting on? Kei Who??

  • One of my favourite quotes from last season was when, in the depths of a relegation struggle, Ruddy pledged his loyalty to Norwich. Now, after the worst has happened, he remains loyal. Good for him. He is also encouraged by the signing of Grabban and will be further buoyed if reports in todays papers of our interest in Ross McCormack results in the arrival of another attacking option.

  • Hello Brew,on a lovely sunny Sunday morning! A quick word to you from 'Pa' ! It is said that copying is the best form of flattery, or something like that! I wonder if he is a pheasant plucker like what I am? He is the second one to get in on the act, as I've noticed that some other contributor adding Jethro has also made an attempt! All very original ! Not much to say about football at the moment! I am pleased to see Neil Adams is putting our house in order! Must be a nightmare after taking over from Steady On's friend or relation!

  • Parsnip, are you Pa Snipps with an identity makeover? Just wondering. To test the theory, please explain `The Pa Snipps Chevron`, in not more that 2,500 words. I agree with you about the Ipswich fellow-travellers on these boards. It seems there are a (very) few Norwich fans who do likewise on the Donkeys` message boards - so `every mother has one`, to coin a cliché. Of my Hero, Barking Wise, I implore "What`d I say??". • Ruddy should be in Brazil. Foster is Woy's favourwite and would have been interesting if WBA had gone down. Still would have taken Foster (or the derter as some call him). The game against Ecuador showed that Foster is average at best. England's loss is our gain i hope. Don't know about everyone else but i'm really looking forward to next season more so than at any time in the last 2 years.

If so, I'm sure that with the addition of Grabban and a few others, the new look management team, plus some good attacking football we'll bounce back into the PL at the first attempt. OTBC!!!
