Jack Yule fires best round of life

Jack Yule fired the lowest round of his young life to record a dramatic victory in the latest Order of Merit competition at Yarmouth and Caister.

The 17-year-old from King’s Lynn followed up a modest morning 75 with a blistering afternoon effort of 64 to win the Caister Candelabra in thrilling fashion. A red-hot putter was the key to Yule’s success, with the teenager using it on just 22 occasions after lunch on his way to an superb six-under-par 18-hole total.

“It was just one of those rounds when everything seemed to roll in,” said Yule, son of Norfolk captain Iain. “It’s strange because I played really poorly the day before in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in Kent and missed the cut.

“So I came up to Yarmouth and Caister and all of a sudden something just clicked. It could have been even lower than a 64, because I had a double bogey on the 10th and also bogeyed the last. There were also a couple of putts that horseshoed out.

“But I’ll settle for a 64. It’s the lowest round I have ever scored and has obviously given me a lot of confidence. Having said that golf is a funny game - it’s often just a toss of a coin as to whether you play well or poorly.”

Yule, who had nine birdies in his second round, won by three shots from Eaton’s Matthew Alden.
