Huddersfield Town manager Simon Grayson is reportedly interested in signing Norwich City striker James Vaughan on a permanent deal in January.

The 24-year-old - on a season-long loan at the Championship club - scored the second goal in a 3-1 win over promotion rivals Blackpool on Monday night.

Grayson told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner: “Signing James in January is a possibility. We’ve got him on loan until the end of the season anyway so that’s an option.

“I’ve got a chairman who’s willing to back me in the transfer market and he’s done it previously. There’s lots of options for us but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

“James is rightly flying with confidence. All he needed when we signed him in the summer was games under his belt.

“If he can have an injury-free season, he can be a major acquisition for us because he’s strong, powerful and good in the air, and he was a constant threat for us against Blackpool.”

  • Not that many managers have success with more than one club but that depends on how you judge success. Harry got both Southampton and Portsmouth out of relegation trouble when they looked doomed. On the other hand I can only think of 3 managers who have one the top league title in England with more than one club.

  • I don't thnk CH could add a free agent until January even if he found one now that he has named his 25 man premier squad. Is this correct?

  • I hope you're right Doc, but you must admit there is a certain -albeit hopefully temporary- irony in the situation. Unless CH knows of a goalscoring free agent lurking out there we could soon be in serious trouble.

  • Give it a couple of weeks, Holt will have goals under his belt, Vaughan will have an injury that keeps him out for the season, equilibrium will be restored.

  • I think CH has a bit of work to do to win over the fans. It is great we are not having too many scored against us; however, unless we actually score some goals we WILL go down. Probably time to give young Kane a start so we can see what he can do. Perhaps Holt and Kane upfront with Wes providing the service. I feared the worse v Newcastle when I saw the 4-5-1 again, we are not Barca. We actually need to have forwards on the pitch to score goals. Chris hougton's Green and yellow army

  • Even though I believe in CH, I did not and still do not understand the Vaughan loan, it certainly looks like we could do with him at the moment.

  • Having seen last nights game on Sky, he showed pace, determination and was excellent in the air. Not only flicking on for an assist for the first goal but rising above everyone to power in a header himself. Considering they outplayed Blackpool, it would indeed be ironic if he helps Huddersfield into the premiership whilst we head the other way. Then why would he want to return to us....

  • I think you're right Swiss. Hoots has an excellent track record @ Spurs, N-castle + B-ham. If he does fail with us,it would be his first failure. However on the subject of him "coming good" anytime now would be great ...

  • Anyone who did what Hughton did at Newcastle is not an idiot. He will come good for us IMHO. However, the jury is out on Calderwood.

  • just because huddersfield want him doesn't mean that it is a done deal. Glad he is doing well and i hope he can have an injury-free season but i think that if he proves he is over his injuries and carries on as he is at the moment then CH won't let him go easily. As already said, we might need him in January.

  • Wasn't My Ed a talking horse? Sorry if my comments made you bridle with indignation. You are of course quite correct; it is drivel. I just really want an explanation for giving away the striker most prolific in the preseason games with no replacement, starting the season with 12 midfield players, then buying a fourth goalkeeper? Can you explain it please?

  • I wish I shared your faith Joburg C but no depth of stupidity is beyond this managerial set up. I wouldn't be surprised if as we speak, Hughton is negotiating a free transfer for Vaughan with Wes and Grant thrown in. Why not given them all away, we don't want any nasty players signed by previous management now do we? mark my words, this man is an idiot and I am surprised that McNally let him sign Bunn and give Vaughan away.

  • Mentioned on a previous forum that it felt like we let Vaughan go expecting a proven scorer to come in, and when that fell through we had to secure the exciting but unproven Kane at the eleventh hour. If we even considered letting Vaughan go its a mistake, and I'm sure we won't. We need to remember he's still relatively young, and there are many premier players who have benefitted physically and mentally from a year in the Championship.

  • once upon a time James vaughan on loan to Hudds seemed ok while they had Rhodes, mistakenly i hoped a deal including a player exchange could be worked out. Then we bought Bath,Chelsea , or some other Bunn and Rhodes lead to Blackburn. Now as JV starts to fulfil his potential the cheeky Huddds boys would like to keep him. We may well need to recall him in january if we put a recall in the loan deal. If we didnt could a panic buy be on the way
