There is a new name on the trophy for the winner of the Norfolk men’s cross country championships.
City of Norwich athlete Tom Hook led the biggest field of the day from the start in the 12km event. He built up a big lead over the second man to finish, John Battrick of the North Norfolk Beach Runners. Hook passed on the opportunity to run in the junior race to take the senior title.
Meanwhile the Beach Runners took the team title.
Ellie Matthews (CoNAC), who has built up a good reputation on the road running circuit, won the ladies’ county title over a 9km course for the first time. By the finish she had managed to build up a huge lead over the second finisher, Nicky Alford.
Great Yarmouth`s Kyle Ella took the junior men`s championship and Nastassja Potgieter was a convincing winner of the junior women’s 6km championship. In a competitive under-17 men`s event Ashley Waterson eventually built up winning lead over Bruce Beckett in the 6km event.
Sophie Alden proved that competing in triathlons is no handicap to running cross country events as she was another convincing winner of the under 17 ladies’ 6km event.
Luke Spear was also a clear and convincing winner of the under 15 boys’ 4.9km championship.
Tracey Curl, competing for the City of Norwich club, took the veterans women’s title. In the younger age groups Nelly Porter looks to have lots pf promise after winning the under 13 girls’ event.
The courses for the Norfolk championships were over large laps of the gently undulating Euston Hall estate near Thetford. The championships were very ably organised by the Thetford Athletics Club.
As a result of these championships teams will be selected to represent Norfolk in the national Inter County championships at Birmingham in March.
There has been talk of cooperation between Norfolk and Suffolk in the organisation of county championship events. The races at Euston Hall may go some way towards this since technically the event this year was actually in Suffolk.
Norfolk`s competitors in the London Mini Marathon will also come from these championships.
The Norfolk Schools cross country championships will be held at Sloughbottom Park in Norwich on January 22.
The Norfolk indoor championships will be at Lynnsport, King’s Lynn on January 26.
