Grant Holt not planning to leave Norwich City any time soon

Grant Holt insists he is staying at Norwich City. Grant Holt insists he is staying at Norwich City.

Norwich City captain Grant Holt does not expect his future to be a hot topic for a second consecutive summer.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Holt’s contract impasse was one of the main themes of the previous close season before City’s Hall of Famer extended his Carrow Road deal until 2015.

The 31-year-old reiterated his commitment to the club again yesterday after the recent decision to re-locate his young family back to Cumbria following fevered January transfer window speculation which centred on a potential Celtic switch.

“I wanted to sign my deal last summer to let me know where I am,” said Holt. “There’s been a lot of talk I’ve got this move lined up to Celtic or I’m going here or I’ve got this. If I have, no one’s told me. It doesn’t matter where the family are, whether they’re here or there, it’s still for football reasons and that’s why I wanted three years. I signed it and as long as the manager wants me here and the club want me, I’ll stay.

“The only reason they moved up there was for schools. There’s a school that came up where I can probably hit the school with a stone from my house. It’s fine. I did it in League One, the family were up there for a year and I didn’t hear anyone moaning then when I scored 30 goals and we got promoted to the Championship, so I did it then. I probably did more driving then than I’ve ever done. You know what to do, you manage it and there are a lot of people worse off.”

Holt has been re-deployed in a lone front-running role for the majority of the season, but his first goal since December secured a priceless Premier League win over Everton last time out.

“That’s the way it’s gone lately. I thought 30 seconds earlier my chance had gone with (Sylvain) Distin, but thankfully it fell to me and it was nice to get the goal and get a bit of recognition for once,” he said. “I think everyone’s aware that we needed it. We’ve been unlucky in the last few weeks with draws that we thought we should have got more out of and didn’t. But to get three points and get that eight-point cushion gives us a massive boost with 11 games to go. I always want to score goals and if anyone tells you otherwise they’re an absolute liar. You always want to score goals. But you can look at any interview I’ve done, as long as the team win and we stay up or get promoted, I was never bothered.”

“It doesn’t matter if I put one in from 25 yards or it’s a tap-in. I’ll take any single goal, if it hits me on the backside and goes in, I’ll take it, I’m not bothered.”

Not sure if it reaches as far as the Essex Riviera! 218.64 Hz. Seem to remember I used to listen on MW and had reception problems; sounded like a Dutch station, so I invested in a £30 Tesco DAB\CD player. Cheap tat, but it works!!

  • In the middle of this scintillating drivel MBA made an interesting point about playing Holty central behind a front two. This I think has merit as a variant on the big striker up front role. He would also, as he does in the lone striker role, pull opposition players to him and leave the forwards as freer pitch. OTBC

  • 3 points today would pretty well see us to another season in the prem. especially with the remaining games we've have. The only reason that I can think of CH. preferring to lose 1 or 2 nil as opposed to being beaten 6-0 is that he might think it will come down to goal difference at the end of the season. But that's already stuffed anyway. So we might as well go for it and be adventurous.

  • Your arrogance is out of order SO. For a long time, we have all got on well on here. Sometimes agreeing, sometimes not, but always respecting each other's opinions. Ged, many of us chose to ignore, but he\she never resorted to insults. I am now going to totally ignore you SO and suggest the rest of us do the same. You are entitled, of course, to your own opinions and to offer them here - just cut out the insults when our opinions differ from yours, please. We have a great team that we are all proud to support but sometimes it is nice to have the option through these pages to offer our opinion. You are denying this pleasure and as for instructing MB to get 'his underlings to back our opinions or cut them out', this is 'beyond the pale'.

  • Yes, MBA, agreed. I`m listening on Radio Partridge today, in combination with watching Final Score. The mute buttons on the remotes are useful! The local pub does "stream" games, but this area has a heavy infestation of Inner M25-ers so the chances of the local team being screened are slim. I really think there`s a chance of a point today. OTBC. OMG, I`ve just seen that I am now "The self-appointed leader of the herd". What an honour. And what chance of Olive branches being accepted? Not a lot. You`re never an "underling", MBA? Apart from the obvious I can remember Dickson Etuhu expressing shock that his mate Earnshaw had left Norwich, approximately 4 days before Etuhu did the same.
