Gorleston Paralympic champion Jessica-Jane Applegate has notched up medals, records, qualification for this summer’s European Championships in Glasgow and a bit of history – all in just three weeks.
The 17-year-old City of Norwich swimmer will compete for Great Britain at August’s championships in Eindhoven after hitting the qualifying marks in the S14 200m freestyle and individual medley, during a meeting at this year’s Commonwealth Games pool in Tollcross, Glasgow. There was also success for Applegate in Berlin, where she competed in 19 races over four days – and gained four British records. The new benchmarks came in the S14 50m and 200m butterfly, and 400m individual medley and freestyle.
And to round off a busy period for the London 2012 Paralympic champion – coached by City of Norwich’s Alex Pinniger – took in the Regional Championships at Luton, where she broke the 100m freestyle British record in the heats and made it through to the able-bodied finals where Applegate claimed silver by becoming the first female British S14 swimmer to go sub-one minute with a new British Paralympic record.
Applegate is now 0.01 seconds off an able-bodied national qualifying time in the 50m freestyle, and 0.35 off the 100m freestyle mark.
