Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has confirmed that Norwich City’s Wes Hoolahan will play at least 45 minutes of the friendly against Greece on November 14.
Trapattoni confirmed Hoolahan’s involvement at Wednesday’s squad announcement ahead of the friendly at the Aviva Stadium.
The Irish manager said: “He is experienced and we have followed him. He grows. With (James) McCarthy for example, I wish to see them on the pitch together. You will only find out on the pitch if someone is up to international level or not. It’s impossible to answer.
“We always follow him every game. We know he is beautiful but he plays in a position behind the striker. Our system until now, we tried this in the past with James (McClean) and it wasn’t positive as James is young, and we need offensive two strikers in our system.”

Delighted for Wes. But, rumours today on Yahoo! that NCFC are stalling over a new contract for him and that Sunderland (and why wouldn't they be), Aston Viilla (of course!) and Fulham (hmmm!) are interested. It is at the end of the article: Premier League - Mancini 'agreed secret deal to leave City' and is attributed to the Daily Snail: "And finally, Norwich are in danger of losing midfielder Wes Hoolahan after dragging their heels over a new contract. The 30-year-old's form earned him a place in the Republic of Ireland squad on Thursday and he is being trailed by Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham and leading Championship sides."

As Swiss has said, will Trapper Tony be able to extend the range of his thinking to accommodate Wes into an effective system? It`ll be no good if he expects Wes to join a bunch of artless midfield plodders, with no licence to wave his magic wand. What a pity Holty`s not "Irish" too. Those two could do great things for Tony`s team. Mind you, he wants "two offensive strikers" and Holty always seems the perfect gentleman. ;-)

Actually Wes stopped 'growing' some time ago, as evidenced by the fact that he is rather short. Why now, I ask? Is it because Mr Trappatoni is looking for a way to save his job and his flagging team? Congrats anyway Wes, just show them that you should have been picked in the first place.

So "He grows" and "he is beautiful". Well that's two good reasons for selection right there. Good luck Wes against those Greeks. The bigger opponent is still probably going to be Trapattoni's system by the sound of it rather than an assessment of whtehr he can play at an international level.
