Frostbites’ sailors beat the weather

Things improved for sailors on Sunday, inasmuch as the Frostbites’ turnout almost doubled to seven Norfolks, enjoying two chilly races in a light westerly.

In the class race, and a barely perceptible wind, Ray Johnson and Wendy Bush held the lead throughout, despite the best efforts of Robert George and Kate Mackley, who pressed them all the way – an excellent performance from George in his first season sailing a Norfolk.

The handicap race, enjoying rather more wind, produced another close encounter with Paul and Elise Carrington under intense pressure from Kate and Robert – but to no avail as they clung on to cross the line six seconds ahead, with Alan Mallett and John Gilbert leading the rest, a good two minutes adrift of the leaders.

In view of the low attendance the programmed Juniors Race was postponed and will hopefully be sailed this Sunday in conjunction with the Ladies race.

No such luck for Snowflakes, who arrived to find that not only were their boats still icebound in the dyke but, thanks to an unusually low water level, were also firmly embedded in the putty.

This meant the cancellation of the Martin Dugdale memorial race. Likewise ice in Rollesby, possibly thick enough for skating, precluded any activity there.
