The pitfalls of social media have been highlighted for Norwich City fans overnight, after many were duped by a fake Twitter account posing as BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks.

The fake account claimed that Celtic manager Neil Lennon was due to be appointed in the next 48 hours, saying: “It is happening and he can’t wait.”

Subsequently Lennon’s odds for becoming the next City manager have tumbled with bookmakers, suggesting a rush of money staked on the Northern Irishman following the tweets.

The BBC has confirmed that former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks is not on Twitter and that the tweet is not genuine.

A BBC spokesman said: “Garth is not on Twitter, this is a completely fake account.”

Norwich fans are today eagerly awaiting news of who the club’s new manager will be, after a club statement was released on Sunday night, saying: “The board will confirm who our manager will be in the 2014-15 season in a statement to supporters within a week.”

  • Laudrup would be the worst choice of manager for what faces us in the championship next season , his silky smooth { slow } football would not cut it . We will have to have a fist pumping motivational manager first and foremost and one who knows the transfer market well. A tough , grinding 46 games ahead where we will expect to win more than we lose . That in itself can lead to many a false dawn !

  • Probably a troll with nothing else to do. Garth Crooks has never talked any sense sine he retired from playing football. Complete waste of a large space

  • I reckon Garth Crooks and Paddy Davitt are linguistic and cultural clones. Crooks is even worse than Davitt. He puts on that earnest, eyebrow-raised look of certainty and sagacity, then pontificates more perfectly than the Pope. Utter, posing, shallow, bubble-head. Perfect for the modern media world. Something for which The Padster should aspire....

  • CovCanary, I think all of us would love Laudrup as manager, but there's not a chance he would come to the Championship and manage us.

  • Had to be fake as poor old Garth will never use one word when he can use a thousand.

  • Lennon would be good, I think, but I would like to see Laudrup as manager of Norwich. He'd get us playing attacking football. I thought he done a good job at Swansea and couldn't believe it when he got the boot

  • Anyone else think it's suspicious the effect this sort of thing has on betting. Good for the bookies who could end up taking a lot of money on someone who actually might be less likely to get the job. Also, have to pay out less if the person does get the job as the odds will shorten. Good too for someone betting on a former favourite, as they are likely to get a better payout if they do get the job.
